Florestan and Magister Raro are

characters found in

Schumann’s piano

character pieces.

Florestan is the wild,

free tune that perhaps

needs to be put in itsplace. Magister Raro

(Schumann’s alter

ego) is the wise,

controlling voice that

made sense of the

proceedings. Quick 

cuts and tiny quotes(mainly Schumann

and Messiaen reflect

the quick-cutting,

hyperactive attention spans of television,especially cartoons.

Merritt (bn. 1975)   was theyoungest-ever winner of the

ASCAP Foundation/Rudolph

Nissim Award for  Janus Mask.

He is also the winner of a host

of other awards including the

2008-09 Copland Award, the

2008 Minnesota OrchestraComposer Institute Prize forRiver of Blood  , and the 2006

Polyphonos Prize

He received his Bachelors

from Trinity University   and

his Masters and

Doctorate from

Indiana University. H e s t u d i e dcomposition with

David Sandström,

Cl au de Bake r ,Timothy Kramer, Don

F r e u n d , a n d

electronic and

computer music with

  Jeffrey Hass. He is currently AssistantProfessor of Composition at St. Olaf 

College. He resides in Northfield,

Minnesota with his wife Yuedong and

their children Cullen Fang Ouxiang and

Molly Fang Qinghe.
