We Are Not Here to Play “God gave us a spirit, not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.
Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord . . .
but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
who saved us and called us to a holy calling.”
T HAT WE LIVE IN PERILOUS TIMES seems an understatement. We are experiencing major upheaval
in every sphere of our existence—political, cultural, social, financial, ethical, and the foundational
structures of Christian faith and home.
I was reminded last evening as our elders within the church gathered, in moments of crisis we tend to do one of
three things: fight, flight or freeze. I believe those are exactly the responses we are seeing to the global earth-
quake that is shaking the foundations of humanity and civilization.
What are we as the Church to do? Flee? Freeze? Fight? For many the choice is to freeze, to bury our heads
(metaphorically) in the sand. That is tragically what the church did as Hitler rose to power. If we freeze now,
the results will be just as tragic. To flee might be an option, but to where would we flee? There is no place to
flee. Or, are we to stand and fight?
For me, the obvious answer is number three. I pray by God’s grace that I will stand strong and not waver; that
I will remain faithful in the face of adversity; that I will not
cower or falter in the heat of battle. We are to take our stand
on truth and fight. But let me hasten to remind you with the
inspired words of the apostle Paul,
We must do this with love, not hate; with a heart that longs for redemption, not condemnation; returning good
for evil, not evil for evil. But certainly we must not acquiesce, or worse yet, call what is evil good and what is
good evil. The only way that we can do this is to know the truth and what the will of the Lord is. Just where
and how are we to discern that? The Psalmist tells us.
With my whole heart I seek You;
let me not wander from Your commandments.
I will meditate on Your precepts
and fix my eye on Your ways.
I will delight in Your statutes:
I will not forget Your word (Psalm 119:10, 15-16 -ESV)
God would challenge us with the same words he challenged Joshua, and all who would serve Him and lead his
people:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the
LORD your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9 – NIV).
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as
the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the
weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine
power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments
and every pretension that sets itself up against the
knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to
make it obedient to Christ (2 Cor.10:3-5—NIV).

I was recently reminded of a little known, soul-stirring hymn written over 100 years ago (1899), that I was
privileged to learn while a student at Cincinnati Bible College many years ago. I have never forgotten it. It
stirs my soul even now as it did then. It is a rally cry to all of God’s people in days of darkness—when storms
rage and devastate the landscape of humanity—when Satan’s minions threaten and boast. I leave you with
that ever-relevant challenge raised by Maltbie Babcock.
Be strong!
We are not here to play, to dream, to drift;
We have hard work to do and loads to lift;
Shun not the struggle, face it, ’tis God’s gift.
Be strong!
Say not the days are evil— who’s to blame?
And fold the hands and acquiesce— O shame!
Stand up, speak out, and bravely, in God’s Name.
Be strong!
It matters not how deep intrenched the wrong,
How hard the battle goes, the day, how long;
Faint not, fight on! Tomorrow comes the song.
