What is FIUTS?

• Independent community non-profit organization

• Affiliated with the University of Washington

• Located on the UW campus

• Created in 1948 by community members, UW faculty, and local business leaders

FIUTS Mission: At the intersection of the

University of Washington and our community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement in

experiences that build global understanding

FIUTS Education Outreach Programming:

Connecting international students to local children

Benefits of Education Outreach Programming:

• Provide opportunities for students to learn about US education system

• Leadership development and public speaking

• Introduce local children to diverse cultures

• Provide role models in diverse fields with diverse backgrounds

Classroom teachers invite international students to share their culture with K-12 Students in a

variety of settings and subjects.

FIUTS Classroom Ambassador Program

FIUTS Classroom Ambassador Program

• Marketing to teachers at all levels/responding to community requests

• Students are recruited in advance and trained in biennial sessions

• Database of available students is used to match students with special opportunities.

Classrooms communicate via email with international students for six weeks, then meet in person at a

FIUTS Wednesday Lunch.

FIUTS Pen Pals

• Relationships with individual teachers built up over time – word of mouth• Students are recruited during the weeks before the program begins• Curriculum provided to teachers •Students are selected for international diversity and academic major

• Annual event includes country booths, performances, activities, and food

• Country booths and activities during the day involve 4-6 classrooms each year

• Evening performances open to the public

How can you start an education outreach program on your campus?

• Start small – build a relationship with one teacher at a nearby school

• Aim for 1-2 programs per year

• Build on existing social events or programs
