HOUSING ESTATES in andaround Clondalkin have beenplagued with giant rats, thanksin part to “rat havens” pro-vided by cowboy builders.
The builders create theproblem by leaving redundantpipes unplugged — usuallywhen they’re working onhouse extensions.
“There are two kinds of in-festation, those in the 12-to-18-inch pipes in the mainsystem, and those in the 4-inch pipes that connect do-mestic waste to the sewer,”rodent expert David Smith ex-plains.
It is in these smaller pipesunder their houses, or in theirgardens, that Clondalkinhomeowners can find a nastysurprise. Prevention, Mr Smithsays, is far better than cure —but both are on offer.
A “Ratflap” is a kind ofvalve that lets the waste flowout but stops the rats comingin. However, it is another mat-ter to tackle rat colonies thathave already infested redun-dant pipes underneath a mainhouse or extension.
“Ideally, a builder laying afoundation should plug anyredundant pipes, or betterstill, remove them altogether,”Mr Smith explained.
“Instead of spending anhour or two doing the jobproperly, many of them sim-ply stuff the end of the pipewith old cement bags, or someother temporary plug.”
He warns that determinedrats, especially those tryingfrantically to escape during along winter, will scratch theirway through all but the

strongest of barriers, evenconcrete!
“It can be a generationalproject. The older rats scratchand scratch, the younger onesfinish the job.”
At that stage, they’re in thehouse.
“I have to come in, findthe pipe, get rid of the rats, and then completely removeor plug up the pipe.”
If the pipe is buried under-neath a concrete floor, some-thing like Ratflap is part of thesolution. But, he insists, all re-dundant pipes should, as amatter of policy, be removedby builders when they lay thefoundations for an extension. If this is impractical, MrSmith’s company can fit a“collar” to allow a main drain
to function, while cutting offall access to out-of-use tribu-tary pipes.
One of the reasons thatproblems persist is thathouseholders may be reluc-tant to draw attention tothem:
“The stigma is that youhave rats because your houseis not clean. In fact, yourhouse can be spotlessly clean, and this can still happen.”
While individual residentsmay remain silent about ratsinside their dwellings, somehave been vocal about ratproblems in the streets andparks.
Those living in the Kilcro-nan estate outside Clondalkinblame the problem of rats onthe streets and in the parks on
three factors:• rats coming through to
the estate from the nearbyGrand Canal
• the lack of proper bins —some suggest a big skip — todiscourage littering
• no proper preventativeaction on the part of the IrishHousing Co-Op.
However, Irish HousingCo-Op, which runs the Kilcro-nan Estate, say that they havestepped up their fight againstinfestation, laying down poi-son and setting traps in andaround the sewers.

Cuan Álainn re-openedDUBLIN South West SinnFéin TD, Seán Crowe, has de-scribed the news that CuanÁlainn in Tallaght will be re-opened as fantastic. The re-opening comes following anagreement between Re-spond!, the Dublin RegionalHomeless Executive, andSouth Dublin County Coun-cil.
Cuan Álainn was origi-nally a refuge for women andchildren fleeing domestic vi-olence and it will now be re-opened as secureaccommodation for womenand children who are home-less.
Deputy Crowe said: “This
shelter provided a safe havenfor 71 women and 86 childrensince it opened its doors in2012. The centre which wasbuilt and operated by the Re-spond! Housing Associationhad to close in December2015 due to funding difficul-ties.
“I strongly criticised theinaction of the Fine Gael andLabour Government whichrefused to provide this vitalrefuge with a sustainablesource of funding and raisedthe issue in the Dáil on nu-merous occasions.
“I warmly welcome theagreement that has now beenreached between Respond!,
the Dublin Regional Home-less Executive, and SouthDublin County Council, which will see Cuan Álainnre-opened to welcomewomen and children who arehomeless and in need of sup-port in order to move backinto housing with the neces-sary supports.
“I am sure that CuanÁlainn’s 10 specially de-signed units and their fullyqualified and qualified staffwill ensure that this centrecan again be a sanctuary anda place of refuge for childrenand their mothers in DublinSouth West.”

SENATE WINS byMáire Devine (SF),John Dolan (Ind) andFrances Black (Ind)will offer hope tomental health anddisability lobbies.
All three Senatorsvow to reverserespite and carers’allowance cuts.
Máire Devine, aSinn Féin councillorrepresenting TallaghtCentral, was electedon the third count. But Senator Dolan,CEO of the DisabilityFederation of Ireland(DFI), had to sitthrough a nail-bitingeighth count beforethe legendary pollprophet Adrian Ka-vanagh pronouncedhim “effectivelyelected” to serve onthe Administrativepanel. Dolan was an“outside” candidate,i.e., one voted on byhis peers in relatedbodies, rather thanby members of theOireachtas.
“If I had a ‘what Iwant from Santa’wish, it would be forIreland to ratify theUN charter on Peo-ple with Disabilities,”Senator Dolan toldLocal News.
“This means in-come support, andalso access.”
This involvedmore than just trans-port and publicplaces:
“It means theability enter into lifefully: access tohealth, social serv-ices and jobs.”
Senator Devine,
a nurse, is a long-time advocate forchildhood mentalhealth; and SenatorDolan’s job as CEOof the DFI hasbrought him intodaily contact with is-sues surroundingboth mental andphysical handicap.
Senator Devinesaid she was “sur-prised and gratified”to receive supportfrom inside and out-side Sinn Féin:
“In most cases, voters would havehad to go with theparty whip, but in mycase I received somevery welcome votesfrom independents.”
She said shehoped to hit theground running, par-ticularly on chil-dren’s issues. Sheprovided Local Newswith some startlinginsights into the linkbetween B+B accom-
modation and men-tal health:
“I’ve seen chil-dren of 8, 9 and 10years of age regress-ing back to an infantor mute state, theyjust can’t take it anymore.”
Sometimes, shesaid, this inability toexpress themselvesalternated with ag-gressive or acting outbehaviour. Thesewere children livingwhat she called “boxroom lives”:
“They arebunked up withgrannies and auntiesand uncles andcousins, sleeping inbox rooms or on thesofa. It’s either thator some B+B wherethey have no privacy,no place to play.”
Her election co-
incided with a Kil-dare Street demon-stration protestingcuts in mentalhealth, carers’ al-lowance and otherausterity measures.
Senator Devinewas part of a “GreenRibbon Campaign”to de-stigmatisemental health prob-lems, and to restorecuts in the mentalhealth budget.
She is now joinedby entertainerFrances Black, whoran as an independ-ent but receivedwidespread supportfrom Sinn Féin.
“I will be a voicefor the vulnerable, for those impactedby addiction andmental health,” thesinger said.
Tallaght mum
Senator Lynn Ruanemade it throughTrinity despite facingthe challenges ofbeing a single mum,and having leftschool at fifteen. Shewon the last of thethree Trinity seats, many of her votescoming from thevery students sherepresented as Presi-dent of the TCD Stu-dents Union in 2014.
Ruane wantsabortion in otherthan the very excep-tional circumstancespermitted today.
“However, youdon’t have to agreewith me on abortionto support me onother issues, such asequal access to edu-cation.”
Already, SenatorRuane has taken thatcampaign for accessto the wider world, speaking at a confer-ence of EducationMinisters in Londonearlier this year.
Elsewhere, Fi-anna Fáil CouncillorCatherine Ardagh, narrowly beaten for aDáil seat byAAA/PBP candidateBríd Smith, won aplace on the Indus-trial and Commercialpanel. KevinHumphreys (Lab),who lost his DublinSouth East seat, wonelection to the Ad-ministrative panel.Party colleague Aod-hán Ó Riordáin, wholost out in DublinBay North, waselected to the Indus-trial and Commercialpanel.
1124 votes werecast by Senators,newly-elected TDsand city and countycouncillors nation-wide. Graduateswere able to vote inthe Trinity and NUIpanels.

Calls on Government toreview fuel allowance
SINN FÉIN TD SeánCrowe has urged theoutgoing governmentto review again thefuel allowance, whichended on April 1st.He made the call dueto serious concernsregarding the impactof the current long, cold spell on vulnera-ble families and indi-viduals.
Deputy Croweclaimed that 2,800people died last yearfrom medical condi-tions that are directlylinked to fuel poverty.
The fuel al-lowance paymentfrom the DepartmentSocial Protection hasa cut-off date of the1st of April but theDublin South WestTD believes that itdoesn't take cogni-sance of weatherconditions. Arguingthat the allowanceshould be extendeduntil the end of May,or until the cold pe-riod passes, DeputySeán Crowe said:
“There are be-tween 200,000 and400,000 householdsin chronic fuelpoverty in this state, including the elderlyand those with a dis-ability, who more sus-ceptible to the cold. These groups have agreater dependencyon the fuel allowance.
“The current pay-ment is €22 a week, but it begins on the1st of January endson the 1st of April, which is far too soon. The fuel allowancesupport needs to beextended to reflectIreland’s current coldconditions andweather patterns inrecent years. The pay-ment from the De-partment SocialProtection isn’t fit forpurpose and needs tobe more flexible. Irishweather patterns, inrecent years, alsosuggest that this pay-ment period doesn’treflect the need or re-ality of many house-holds in fuel poverty.
“Research hasalso shown that peo-ple over the age of 65are seven times morelikely to be hospi-talised as a result ofcold temperatures, compared to ayounger age group.
“Fuel poverty oc-curs when a house-hold needs to spendmore than 10 percent of its income onenergy in order tomaintain an accept-able level of heatthroughout thehome.
“Hospitals andAccident and Emer-gency wards acrossthe country are cur-rently inundated withpeople suffering frompneumonia, hy-pothermia and othersevere bronchial con-ditions.
“Surely, thisshould be another in-dicator that it wouldbe a rational decisionto extend the fuel al-lowance scheme tothose in need.
“I am calling onthe outgoing govern-ment and the Minis-ter for Social
Protection Joan Bur-ton to do the rightthing They should, as
a matter of urgency, agree an extension ofthe fuel allowance
scheme till the end ofMay or until this coldperiod passes.”

Nine men in €¾million battle against illegal wasteTHE CITY is payingthe equivalent of ninemen, full time, in itsnonstop battle againstillegal dumping.
According to an-swers sought be CllrDaithí Doolan (SF, Bal-
lyfermot/Drimnagh),the problem is partic-ularly acute in theSouth Central area onthe southside, and inCentral on the north.
South Central in-cludes the Coombe,
Dolphins Barn, Crum-lin and Drimnagh.Central includes all ofthe City Centre northof the Liffey. Citybosses say that it isdifficult to calculatethe exact costs and
DOOLAN: waste not
collection time in-volved. “The collec-tion of such wasteoften coincides withthe collection of litterbin waste or streetsweeping waste, etc.,and therefore cannotbe exactly quantified,”said John Billane, Su-pervisor of WasteManagement Serv-ices. However the binmen also conduct pe-riodic surveys. This al-lows them to make anestimate as to the costof illegal bags of waste
and other forms ofdumping. On thatbasis, about €670,000per year, or some€12,000 a week, isspent clearing up afterthose who dump onthe street. However, there are “hiddencosts” involved thatmake the figure muchhigher, warns Mr Bil-lane: “These figures donot include costs re-lated to the litter war-dens service,” henoted. “Nor do theyinclude the adminis-
trative/clerical costsinvolved in the man-agement, supervisionand collection of ille-gally dumped waste.”
Sources told LocalNews that these addedcosts could bring thetrue price of fly-dumping to close to amillion euros a year —far more if health, tourism and retailconsequences areadded in as well.
Cllr Doolan haslong campaigned forgreater vigilanceagainst litter-louts,and more bins forstreet litter.

LETTER TOTHE EDITORIsn't it time that the State stopped the waste-ful use of taxpayers money on the trumped-up charging of Paul Murphy with unlawfulimprisonment of Joan Burton ? He was one of many supporting a legitimatepeaceful protest. She was in a car sur-rounded by gardai. There was no attempt toprevent the gards going about their dutywhich surely included moving obstructions(including people) aside in order to allowpassage of the car. It is claimed that she andher advisor were falsely imprisoned, sosurely that charge should also include thegardai surrounding them if they were actu-ally physically prevented from doing theirduty. Everyone knows that this was not the case. The guards could have called in extra sup-port to help move anyone causing an ob-struction. If any charges were to be made, they should have simply been charges ofcausing an obstruction against any personswho had to be arrested for physically doingthat. Paul Murphy was not physically doingthat. We do not need an expensive, prolonged trialto determine this. Everyone also knows thatthis is all about failed political manoeveringby the government of the time to disrupt theanti-water-charge campaign. Pity, but let's stop the nonsense now pleaseand, just for once, save taxpayers' money.
Yours, etc,Bob WilsonFlagmount, Co.Clare
DONATE AND DECLUTTERFOR A GOOD CAUSE
Have a look around your house get rid of all the unwanted items you can do with-out. Literally go from room to room put the things in black bags such as clothesbric a brac then put them in a garage or shed or spare room.
Have a look, give the place a good clean decide if there is too much furniture inthe room, is it still too cluttered? If so put the excess furniture out of the room andsee how it looks. The next step is wait a few days with the stuff gone, does yourfeel seem brighter cleaner even? Do you really need loads of clutter? if you de-cide you actually don't call the NCBI charity shop on The Crumlin Road the shopwould be delighted to accept your donations of all kinds. The shop is open 6 daysa week from early till 5pm with plenty of parking outside the shop which is locatedbeside the AIB bank on the Crumlin Road tel 087 139 4384 for all your en-quiries.
The annual NCBI Vintage car show will take place on the last Sunday in June inSt Columba's College from 12 till 5 so prizes for the raffle are needed, any un-wanted presents would be much appreciated too. Last year over €6,000 wasraised on the day for braille machines for children in the local community.

when Local News is Mentioned
Be yourown lifecoachClinical Hypnotherapist
KIERAN FITZPATRICKadvises in his regular column onhow to achieve your goals.
IN THE LAST issue of Local News I spoke aboutdeveloping your observation to tell you whetheror not your actions and behaviours were gettingyou the results you want. We looked at develop-ing our senses to be more observant and also atbeing internally observant. By that I mean be-coming more aware of and observing your feel-ings and emotions and what they are telling youabout the results of your actions..
The next thing I said that we’d need to de-velop is our “Flexibility”. This is something weall need to work on and develop.
Flexibility, in this context, is the ability tochange what you are doing as soon as you re-alise that what you have been doing has notbeen achieving the result that you desire. Flex-ibility to change your behaviour and keepchanging it until you find out what works!
Not achieving your desired outcome in acertain way is never a failure. As Thomas Edi-son said of his many “failed” attempts at in-venting the light bulb, “I have not failed, but Ihave succeeded in discovering yet another wayof not producing electric light”. We need to beready to change and change constantly until wehave found what does work.
One popularly quoted definition of insan-ity is “Doing the same things over and overagain and expecting a different result”! Whenwe are not Observant and Flexible we usuallyend up doing this ourselves.
A good example of where a lack of flexibilityhalts progress and can even be fatal is in our re-lationships. Two people come together withtheir own fixed patterns of behaviour. A rela-tionship can get into a repeating cycle, the fa-mous vicious circle. A circle by definition has noend point. Where there is a pattern of repeatedrows, it is because each person is behaving, re-sponding and reacting in exactly the same wayeach time! If you are in a situation like this, eventhough emotionally you may be driven to be-have in a certain way, try thinking about somedifferent new response or action that you couldtry. It could be physical or verbal. A very goodway to break a pattern is with humour. (Obvi-ously it must be appropriate and laugh “with”and not “at” the other person). If you can bothsee the funny side, it breaks the old ineffectivemood. Why not look at your own behaviour andmaybe even laugh at what you’ve been doing?!
Flexibility in reaching our targets and goalsshould be looked on as a constant adjustmentprocedure. Imagine a helmsman on a boat. Al-though he is obviously travelling from A to B, heis constantly adjusting the rudder to keep theboat on track. If it is a sail boat, in order to getfrom A to B a sailor needs to constantly adjusthis sails and sometimes zig-zag his direction inorder to handle changing conditions andachieve their goal of reaching their destination.
So it is in life also. The most effective peoplehave developed the skills of Observation andFlexibility. They are very quick to notice thatwhat they are doing is not achieving the desiredresults. And they very quickly change their be-haviour in some way to be more efficient andeffective. They do this constantly until they findwhat works!

“It was a longroad for this project;there were a lot of is-sues to overcomeuntil you finallymoved in at the be-ginning of thisschool year. I visited
your school's previ-ously cramped, damp and ageing fa-cilities on a numberof occasions and Iknow that the schoolcommunity has dis-played plenty of pa-tience andperseverance in thattime.
“I assisted with anumber of legal is-sues involved in theproject to ensure theproject progressed ina timely and efficient
manner.“We are cele-
brating today thisfantastic new build-ing, a wonderful,colourful, state-of-

to fruition.“Today is a day of
celebration. I am sohappy to have beenable to join with youfor this occasion. Ihope you all enjoy

POOL FOR LUCANA campaign Pool4Lucan run by local women ßandraWhelan and Helen Farrell has achieved their aim.Government has allocated €3.8m to make up theshortfall which the Council had difficulty for the newpool which will be at Griffeen Valley Park. There hasbeen a need for a pool in the Lucan area since the1980s, and previously there had been a previous com-mitment to build a pool in the area, but it fell through.Commenting on the decision, campaigner Helen Far-rell commented that the group need to keep up thepressure and have an input into the ideas for the proj-ect.Pool4Lucan would like an input on the design andwould like to incorporate seating facility and modularunits within the complex that would allow exhibitionsand other community events.

A company calling itself; Ballyowen Castle PrimaryCare Centre has had its plans to build a four storeyprimary care centre. The HSE had expressed willing-ness to lease the premises and include services e.g..GPs and occupational therapists. However, SouthDublin County Council refused the planning applica-tion on the basis that the project building was tooklarge in context of the site and there were issues withcar parking and infrastructure. Yanks take a pop as Irish crisp wars go globalCANNY MARKET-ING by an Americaninterloper could seeIrish crisp kingsfighting a snack warthis summer.
Popchips is thelatest “boutiquebrand” to join NorthDublin’s Keogh’s,Cork’s Crispins and ahost of small domes-tic rivals. That’s tosay nothing of world-wide giants like ourvery own Tayto, whose boss RayDoyle opened thefun-tastic Cú Chu-lainn roller coaster inTayto Park, CountyMeath, last year.
Each Irish crisp-maker, minnow ormajor, has some-thing special, so hereis our own highly-bi-ased report from thefront lines of thismost fierce of brandbattles. Skirmishesso far include quite afew marketing giftsand gaffs — but youmight also learn ofan unusual taste ortwo to lead you hap-pily into temptation.
PopchipsGood news:
by PAUL KELLY
Forget about thealleged health bene-fits of their fat-freeno-fry zone. Theydon’t cook, they pop,and in fairness thatvery method givesthe Popchip a won-derful featherlighttexture. Add to that amouthful of taste, particularly in theSour Cream & Oniondepartment. TheirIrish agent gets extramarks for bribery:one phone call andLocal News hadscammed a sackful— by express courier!Well done, and keepthe baksheesh com-ing.
Bad news:A bit of jingoism
puts us off a packetwith an English ad-dress — and an
American parent. And there’s thename: in the States, our “crisp” is their“chip”; while our“chip” is their“french fry” (or “free-dom fry”). Did noone tell them that wedon’t all speak fluentAmerican?
Verdict:Marketing: 7/10,
particularly for thefree crisps — oh allright, chips. Marksdeducted for tooYankee a tone andname. Taste: 10/10.My oh my! Moreplease.
Keogh’sGood news:Fantastic Irish
product with impec-cable green and nat-ural credentials.Excellent if broadly
conventional “crisp”texture and taste. Butthis, it turns out, isour fault: the Irishare mad for Keogh’sDubliner IrishCheese & Onion, butit’s the foreignerswho devour theRoast Beef & IrishStout. Genius pack-aging and website, with a brown-paperyfeel: Keogh’s flirtswith twee but avoidsit.
Bad news:Should be in
more corner shops,but isn’t — yet.
Verdict:Marketing: 9/10.
You’d have scored a10 if you’d bribed us.Taste: 10/10. Excel-lent, particularly inthe more mad-as-a-hatter concoctions,
which we’ve only justdiscovered. [Lateflash: the bribe ofseveral bagfuls wasduly offered by TomKeogh himself just aswe went to press. Bythat stage, we’dbought our own.]
TaytoGood news:An Irish classic
that’s now soldaround the world.Backed by marketinggenius Ray Coyle, who had the chutz-pah to carry on withthe Co. Meath TaytoPark long after ourmiserable bankspulled their backing. There, the Cú Chu-lainn rollercoaster —a rare “woodie”, andtherefore an optionas eccentric as Coylehimself — merely
completed what wasalready a marketingdreamscape.
Bad news:The brand is so
ubiquitous as toverge on the generic.A slightly-unhingedimage, in both MrTayto and his mainminder, might haveseen that off thatproblem but alas! Aswe went to press, welearned that both ofthose deities havelong since been way-laid by a bunch ofGermans known as“Intersnack”. A year-old story, but news tous. A shame.
Verdict:Marketing: 8/10.
It does not fully ex-ploit its own found-ing story, and nowGerman caution
means it’s unlikely todo so. Taste: 10/10.Firm familyfavourite.
Crispins, or per-haps Crispin’s (orMr Crispins)
Good news:Makes a genuine
effort to offer ahealthier crisp —and bagged a fewgrand’s worth of freepublicity on a recentDragon’s Den.
Bad news:We can’t find
them: the crisps orindeed the companywebsite. They have aFacebook page and ablogging site thatgoes on at somelength about bio-chemistry, nutritionand the like. If wewanted nutritionwe’d snack onwheatgerm.
Verdict:Not really fair to
render one, based onsuch thin evidence. Itwas a big blundernot to have driventhe post-Den trafficto a really first-ratewebsite: a sin ofomission that a cut-throat snack marketis likely to punish —severely. Scoring
postponed.Overall winner,
Crisp of the Summerof 2016 Award:Keogh’s.
It might wellhave been Tayto ifRay Coyle hadn’tsold out to the Ger-mans. But even Ray’srivals love him, withthe winner, TomKeogh, generouslyadmitting to LocalNews that withouthim, “we’d all be eat-ing Walker’s”.
Keogh’s weighsin at over twice asmuch per bag assome rivals, keepingthe cost-per-crispcloser to genericthan boutique.
H o n o u r a b l emention to Popchipsfor texture, briberyand corruption:thanks lads, we’restill eating. And pay-ola by courier? That’sclass. Well doneDrury|Porter Novelli!We had the oddspasm of shame de-vouring our freePopchips but —crisp, car, and dia-mond-makers pleasenote — we promise itwon’t happen again.

Medics’ turf war truce as James’s wins Children’s HospitalAFTER more than adecade of contro-versy, it now appearscertain that the newChildren’s Hospitalwill be built on theSt. James’s Hospitalsite behind the newFatima complex inDublin 8.
This ends athree-horse race be-tween that site, theConnolly Hospital
site in Blanchard-stown, and the vastfree acres behind theCoombe Women’sHospital — just ahalf-mile from theeventual winner.
The Master of theCoombe, Dr SharonSheehan was quotedby the New Chil-dren’s Hospital aswelcoming the news:
“By ultimately
combining the spe-cialties of the mater-nity, paediatric andadult hospitals inthis tri-location, thequality of care for ourwomen and babieswill be greatly en-hanced,” she isquoted as saying. The statement con-tinues:
“We look forwardto developing thismodel of healthcareexcellence, ensuringa seamless continu-ity of care for our pa-tients.”
There had beensome effort made bythose lobbying forthe Coombe to high-light its competingmerits. However, those voices becamemuted as the plan-ning process woreon.
Indeed, the
three-horse race be-tween James’s, Con-nolly and theCoombe had effec-tively been reducedto just two runnersas final submissionswere heard by AnBord Pleanála.
There were pro-fessionally-preparedand vocal contribu-tions on behalf ofConnolly, lead byJack & Jill founderJonathan Irwin.
Similarly, theNCH/St. James’s op-tion unleashed anon-stop barrage ofpublicity, particu-larly after Local Newspublished front-pagestories in June lastyear, and in late2014, favouring theCoombe option.Local News reportsfavouring theCoombe site werepassionately re-butted by PR and ar-chitectural professionals working forNCH, with our re-porter given one-on-one briefings.
The Coombe inCork Street — thevery site sidelined inthe PR and planningstruggle near the end— was closest tosealing the deal inlate 2012.
As this newspa-per reported in ourJune 25 edition lastyear:
“It has always
been a mystery as towhy the already-cramped St. James’ssite was ever sug-gested. It is alreadyknown that, by late2012, a pro-Coombedecision had beenmade at Cabinetlevel. Simultaneousreports from severalcabinet and politicalsources suggest thatthis was sensation-ally overturned by alast-minute phonecall from a powerbroker associatedwith St. James’s.”
Indeed bothLocal News and TheIrish Times quotedsources inside med-ical and cabinet cir-cles suggesting thatthe Coombe was tobe announced thewinner — only to bethreatened with non-co-operation by theSt. James’s hierarchyif their own, compet-ing submission wasnot given the go-ahead.
Both our sourcesand those cited bythe The Irish Timessuggest that, withjust hours to go be-fore a cabinet an-nouncement, thedecision was re-versed: the Coombelost and St. James’swon.
In our 2015 cov-erage, and in an ini-tial report theprevious year, we
highlighted thetwenty acres ofgrounds adjacent tothe Coombe and thenearby Player-Willsfactory.
These, we sug-gested, could haveoffered more thanvast play areas forlong-term paediatricpatients. The verysize of the site wouldhave allowed thenew build to spreadhorizontally insteadof vertically — result-
ing in huge savingson the deep founda-tions required for theproposed, 5-storeybuilding in St.James’s.
In the end, how-ever, the PR warswere won by trench-ant voices raised bythe eventual win-ners, closelymatched in volumeby Jonathan Irwinbehalf of westDublin. Local Newscontinues to believe
in the merits of theCoombe, both as aphysical space andas a respected med-ical institution.
No specificpromises were madeby NCH about theaddition of a mater-nity hospital to thealready-cramped St.James’s site. Thatadd-on — which re-mains controversial— was not made partof the planning ap-plication.
HOSPITAL: St. James’s wins

Pictured here is the Rialto FC team that played in the Sheeran Dup semi-final. It wasn’t a good day out withJobstown Celtic running out convincing winners. However it hasn’t been bad results, although they were beatenin a second semi final last week, they have since gone on to win the league again.
Danske Bank equivocates on vulture loan plansDANSKE BANK hasoffered an ambigu-ous answer in replyto questions posedby Deputy BrídSmith (AAA/PBP,Dublin South Cen-tral) about the sale ofcredit card loans.
Following nu-merous reports in
this newspaperabout the sale ofSME and credit carddebt to so-called“vulture funds”,Deputy Smith be-came the only candi-date to make this anelection issue earlierthis year. Followingour reports and
Deputy Smith’s cam-paigning, vulturepurchase of creditcard and other debthas now become anational issue.
Last week sheraised the Danskesale in Dáil Eireann— and with the Dan-ish-based bank
themselves.The reply she re-
ceived from DanskeBank reads as fol-lows:
Deputy Smith:Thank you for
your enquiry. DanskeBank has no plans tosell a credit cardportfolio in Ireland. We hope this clearsup any confusion onthe matter and trustthis clarifies the posi-tion.
Yours sincerely,Grellan Dunne
COO Non-Core,Danske Bank Ire-land. (Emphasisadded).
The phrase “hasno plans” — astandby in the PRand political lexiconwhen evasion is re-quired — leaves theway open to the saleof the loans.
Meanwhile, how-ever, there has beensome good news forharried borrowers.
A meeting inBuswell’s Hotel lastweek saw the birth ofanti-vulture lobbyPals Ireland. Thegroup will work to
protect shopkeepers, small farmers andothers harassed bybanks and vulturefunds. Already, sources say, thegroup has had suc-cessful contact withCredit Union chiefs, charities and politi-cians. Protocols are
being worked out toprevent shops beingclosed down, andsmall businessesshuttered, by vul-tures and banks de-manding immediatepayment.
Furthermore, alittle-noted piece oflegislation, passed
last year and chal-lenged in the HighCourt, has now beenvindicated. Thisgives constitutionalsupport to legal ef-forts to keep a familyhome off-limits inany battle betweenbankers and home-owners. It even af-
fords a measure ofprotection to ten-ants, including thosegiven “eviction no-tices” in Tyrrelstown,in north Dublin. Those notices havenow been with-drawn, and declaredinvalid.
“I am very happywith the outcome. Itis a relief,” saidFunke Tobun, whoalong with her hus-band Ademola hadchallenged the evic-tion notice.
“It has been aconstant worry sinceI received the letter. But this means theirattempt to end ourtenancy has been setback.” The victorywas also welcomesby Cllr Matt Waine(AAA, Mulhuddart),who has long chal-lenged tenants andbank borrowers intheir battle againstthe vultures.
DANSKE BANK: “no plansto sell”
ST. JAMES’ GAELS NOTESThe Under 13s boys put in a fine display on Friday night to beat a very tough St Monicas side in Walkinstown Park. TheUnder 11 hurlers put in a great performance on Saturday against Round Towers of Lusk but lost narrowly. The two adultmen’s team have Championship action at home this week. The First team will play Ballyboden Wanderers at 7 o clockTuesday whereas the second team will play St Brendans at 8 o clock Thursday. Both games will be played in the IveaghGrounds and all support is very much welcomed. Juvenile tracksuits are ready to be collected this coming Saturday inthe Iveagh Grounds from half 10 to 12. The Gaelic4Girls and adult fitness classes continue this Monday at half 6. Clubmembership is now due, this can be paid online at stjamesgaels.com or to any manager or committee member. St JamesGaels/An Caisleán would like to express its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Geraldine Connaughtonwho passed away over the weekend.
Sixteen-year wait on Council housing list240 APPLICANTS on the South Dublin CountyCouncil for social housing have been on the listfor more a decade, Cllr Francis Timmons (Ind,Clondalkin) has discovered.
And according to answers given to the Coun-cillor by SDCC officials, one applicant has beenwaiting since 2000 — over sixteen years. There arecurrently 9119 applicants, with an average wait-ing time of just over five years.
Furthermore, Cllr Timmons has found outthat no one in SDCC management can give himeven an approximate figure for the cost of one of
the new, modular houses intended to providepart of the solution to the crisis. “The cost ofbuilding a 3 bedroom Rapid Build unit is not yetknown,” a manager told Cllr Timmons in reply toa written question. SDCC intends to rely on post-build figures offered to them by Dublin CityCouncil. Only then, they say, when the firsthouses are built in Poppintree “will...final ac-counts [be] agreed”. This, according to the neigh-bouring Council, “will provide an indication ofthe cost to expect”. At this stage, Council bossesadd, costs are “not yet finalised”.

Make sure your car stays in tip top shapeCAR maintenance is your your responsibility. Yes,it can be expensive and time consuming, but theinvestment you make today will save you moneydown the road.
Don’t be like the 1/3 of people who changetheir oil less than two times a year because theysimply forget to do it. Your car won’t magicallytake care of itself. Get in the habit of regular carmaintenance and stop making excuses.
Below we take you through some of the rudi-mentary things you should be doing to ensureyour car stays in tip top shape.Every Other Fill-up, Do These Three Things
Instead of standing at the petrol pump andreading the advertisements for a credit card whileyou wait for your tank to fill, use that time to giveyour car a quick check-up (and cleaning) by per-forming three simple tasks:
1. Clean windshield. A dirty, mud splatteredwindshield is a safety hazard, as it obscures yourview of the road. So give it a regular cleaning.Using the spongy part of the petrol stationsqueegee, soak the whole windshield with thecleaning fluid. Then pull the squeegee tightlyfrom the middle of the windshield to the sides, finishing off the remaining streaks by pulling ittop to bottom. This is especially important afteran extended drive on the motorway when yourwindshield is littered with insect carcasses andusing your car’s washing fluid and wipers to re-move them only creates a big, smeary mess thatobscures your line of sight even more.
If your headlights are dirty, give them asqueegeeing as well.
2. Check tire pressure. Maintaining propertire pressure will keep you safe and even save youa little cash. Improperly inflated tires — and thismay mean over-inflated or under-inflated —don’t handle or stop as well as tyres with the cor-rect pressure. They also increase your chance of ablow out. Plus, tyres with the correct pressurehave a longer life and increase your fuel effi-ciency.Recommended tire pressure sticker inside car
You’ll often find your vehicle’s recommendedtyre pressure on a sticker inside the driver’s side
door. Car manufacturers spend a lot of time com-ing up with this number, and it’s the one youshould use.
Checking your tyre pressure takes less thantwo minutes. Here’s how to do it:
For an accurate reading, always check tyrepressure when your tires are “cold,” that is beforeyou’ve driven around on them. I only check mytyres’ pressure at a petrol station when I fill up atthe one less than a mile from my house, firstthing in the morning. If you’ve already been driv-ing around for awhile, let the tyre“rest” for at leastfour hours before checking the pressure.
Find out the tyre pressure recommended foryour car (it’s in your owner’s manual and on apanel inside the driver’s side door. Always fill thetyres to this recommended level, regardless of thebrand, and not to the max PSI found on the tyresidewall – that number indicates the maximumpressure the tyre needs to carry its heaviest load, not the tire’s ideal PSI.
Check tyre pressure with tire pressure gaugeFill when needed
3. Check oil level and top off as needed.Motor oil is essential to your car’s performance. Its most important job is to lubricate all the mov-ing parts in your engine so they don’t grind andtear themselves into dysfunction. It also transfersheat away from the combustion cycle and trapsand holds all the nasty byproducts of com-bustikon, sending it to the oil filter. If your enginedoesn’t have enough oil, your car is at risk ofgoing kaput.
To ensure your car always has enough oil, it’simportant to get in the habit of regularly check-ing it. Your owner’s manual probably recom-mends that you do this at every gas fill-up, butevery other is typically sufficient. Checking yourcar’s oil level is super easy. All you need is a cleanpaper towel, adequate light, and about threeminutes. You should save this job for last becauseyou need to wait about five minutes after youturn the engine off for the oil to drain back intothe pan:

Their was a packed Transport Club, recently to remember Noelly Murphy, who passed away last year at thetender age of 41. A long time member of the Transport Club, people on the night spoke very highly of him as afriend and neighbour. Noelly was a member of the Right to Water campaign and many of his colleagues turnedup on the night and some of them are pictured here.
Irish Ferries has linked up with An Garda Siochana, to support theirforthcoming ‘Chris Crossing’ charity boat row across the Irish Sea,the aim being to raise some €50,000 for the National Neurosurgi-cal Centre at Beaumont Hospital. Planned in memory of Garda ChrisByrne, who passed away in March 2016 as a result of a brain tu-mour, the event is being undertaken by 12 Gardaí from Dublin’sStore Street station. The 12-15 hours crossing from Dublin to Holy-head will take place in late May/early June, depending on weatherconditions. Irish Ferries will provide transport and other logistics sup-port required to guarantee the success of the undertaking. As partof the build-up, celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertain-ment will participate with Gardai in staging on-street rowingdemonstrations at two Dublin city centre locations on Saturday, April 30th when they will row the equivalent of 500metres as part of a Top Gear-themed time challenge. Participants also plan to raise money through a bucket collectionat Dublin’s Aviva Stadium prior to the Ireland v Holland soccer international on May 29th. A wider appeal for sub-scriptions asks members of the public to text Beaumont to 50300 to make a €4 donation, or online at www.beau-montfundraising.ie.
