Dear Parents,
Yesterday was the feast of St Mary of the Cross, Mackillop. St Mary MacKillop was the foundress of the Sisters of St Joseph in partnership with Father Julian Tenison Woods and this order opened a number of schools in Australia. This wonderful, courageous and humble woman is Australia’s first and only saint. Mary, in her writings, distinguished between true and false humility. She thought that genuine humility is grounded on truth – acknowledging our own self-worth in all of its strengths and weaknesses and not allowing misconceptions to be projected to the world. Humility, as viewed by Mary, was free from any illusions about self-importance and grounded in reality: acceptance of the truth about oneself and others. This humility is inspired by charity and thoughtfulness of others and not concerned with one’s self or one’s failings or what others think about us – this is
most definitely a challenge in today’s age of social media ‘likes’. Mary called this humility “the antidote to both self-importance and loss of self-esteem”. So how does this play out for us today in the 21st century? Here are some tips on what humility may look like and how to cultivate it: 1. Listening to others rather than talking. 2. Give other people credit for the things they do, give genuine compliments and praise them. 3. Admit when you are wrong. 4. Go last. 5. Ask for advice. 6. Practise mindfulness and focus on the present. 7. Be grateful for what you have. 8. Seek genuine feedback from others. The school will hold a Feast Day celebration commemorating St Mary Mackillop in the church on Monday at 8:45am. Please join us if you are able.
Have a wonderful weekend. God Bless,
Olivia
