A NEW South African record was setfor the price of beef on Wednesdayevening  at  the  Royal  AgriculturalShow.

The  champion  beef  carcass  —  aBovelder cross, owned by MargentalReds and prepared for the Royal bystudents at the University of KwaZu­lu­Natal — was sold to the Oyster BoxHotel in Umhlanga for R150/kg. Thecurrent ruling price a farmer gets forbeef  is R32,50/kg.

The previous record of R110/kg wasalso set during the annual auction atthe Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg.

The champion carcass recorded ascore of 97,24% from the  judges.

The beef section also drew strongsales  competition  for  the  reservechampion carcasses and the champi­on groups — all of which were pre­pared  for  the  Royal  by  students  atOwen Sithole Agricultural College.

The first reserve champion, a Brah­man cross Simmentaler, owned by J.Labuschagne and Sons, was sold forR90/kg  to  Rattan’s  Butchery;  whilethe  second  reserve,  a  Bonsmara,owned by Jan Meyer, went for R40/kg.

The champion group of Brahmancross Simmentalers, owned by J. La­buschagne and Sons and the reservechampion group, Bonsmaras, ownedby Meyer, both  sold  for R35/kg.

Competition  for  the  championlamb carcass, an Ile de France, ownedby Regina Harmse of the RCH Ile deFrance stud in Ermelo, proved to beespecially fierce with the hammer fi­nally going down at R1 100/kg.

To  put  the  auction  price  in  per­spective, the current ruling price for

lamb  is R52/kg.The figure is one of the highest ev­

er achieved at the Royal, which stillholds the world record of R3 000/kgfor  lamb,  set  in 2007.

The  champion  carcass  —  whichscored 98,32% and was named theChampion European Genetics entryat the 2015 Royal Show — was soldto Willowton Meats.

Gert Lötter’s White Dorper lambstook the prizes  for  the  first  reserve

champion carcass, champion group,first reserve champion group and thesecond  reserve  champion group.

Rattan’s  Butchery  paid  R500/kgfor  the  first  reserve  champion  andR80/kg  for  the  champion group.

The second reserve champion car­cass, a White Dorper owned by Löt­ter’s son, Bennie, was sold to Kenne­dy  Meat  Market  for  R200/kg;  andThe Oyster Box paid R175/kg for thefirst reserve champion carcass Euro­

pean Genetics.The  lowest price  achieved  in  the

lamb competition was R58/kg.In  the  pork  auction,  a  Topig,

owned by Butt Farming, was namedthe champion carcass on show, scor­ing 97,31% from the  judges.

Butt Farming also owned the firstreserve champion, with the prize forthe second reserve champion goingto  the  Joseph Baynes Estate.

At auction the champion sold for

R72/kg to The Oyster Box, more thantriple  the  ruling  price  for  pork  ofR22,20/kg.

The Royal Show carcass auction isconsidered to be a highlight on thefarming calendar and has the backingof the Red Meat Producers Organisa­tion (RPO) and Samic (the South Af­rican Meat  Industry Company).

Addressing the breeders, studentsand buyers, Tim Ralfe of  the RPO,said: “This is a very prestigious event

and I want  to say well done to thestaff of the Royal Show for hostingthe quality  show  that  they do.”

Terry Strachan, chief executive ofthe Royal Agricultural Society (RAS),said: “We are very proud to have anunbroken  international  record  inlamb and unbroken national recordsin  lamb, pork and beef.”

Big  Red  Friday  will  see  consumers  save  upto  50%  off  selected  products.

This  one­day  only  sales  opportunity  is  theShoprite  chain’s  version  of  Black  Friday,  which attracted  considerable  attention  in  November last  year  when  sister  chain  Checkers  was  the first  supermarket  to  bring  the  sales  promo­tion  to  South  Africa.

Black  Friday  is  the  Friday  after  ThanksgivingThursday  in  America,  when  retailers  break with  massively  discounted  merchandise  and the  concept  has  mushroomed  across  the world.

INTER­BREED  judge  Clark  Rattray,praised  the  standard of  entries  in  thisyear’s  Royal  Agricultural  Show  sheepsection.

“Thank you to the breeders for mak­ing my job so hard today,” he said, beforerevealing that he had picked a Dormerram, owned by Scheepers Lamprecht ofRooihoek Dormers in Amersfoort, to behis Supreme Champion Ram on Show.

A  short  while  earlier  Lamprecht’sprize­winning ewe had been named Su­preme Champion Ewe on Show, givingthe breeder a  remarkable double.

For his efforts he received two Stan­dard Bank cash prizes of R1 000 each,rosettes  and  ribbons,  and Royal Showmedallions and  rosettes.

Lamprecht  was  also  presented  withthe William Cooper and Nephews Float­ing Trophy for owning the winning eweand the Farmer Floating Trophy for thewinning  ram.

The  Reserve  Supreme  ChampionRam  at  the  Royal  was  a  HampshireDown, owned by Mark Thiele of ThieleHampshire Down  in Paulpietersburg.

He  received  a  Standard  Bank  cashprize of R500, rosette and ribbon, theNew Zealand Corriedale Society Float­ing Trophy and a Royal Show rosette.

The Reserve Supreme Champion Ewewas another Hampshire Down, makingit  a great  show  for  the breed.

It’s  owner  Janine  Leimer  from  theHamjam stud travelled from Honeydewin Gauteng to attend the Royal, whichplayed host the 2015 Hampshire DownNational Championships.

She  received  a  Standard  Bank  cashprize of R500, rosette and ribbon, theEpol Floating Trophy and a Royal Showrosette.•  arts@witness.co.za

Dave  Baugh  of  Thistledown  Farming  in  Howick  and  his  children  Lucy  and Donovan  are  pictured  with  his  Grand  Champion  Border  Leicester  Ewe.  The ewe  was  aso  named  senior  champion  in  her  breed  class.

AJ  van Heerden  is the  owner of  this year’s Reserve Junior Champion Hampshire Down ewe.  With them  is Oupa Madonda.

AJ  van  Heerden,  of  AJVH  Bordes  in Bethlehem,  is  pictured  with  his  Grand Champion  Border  Leicester  ram.  The  ram was  also  named  the  senior  champion  in his  breed.  Also  in  the  photo  is  the  handler Oupa  Madonda.

ESTELLE  SINKINS

REGINA  Harmse  of  the  RCH Ile  de  France  Stud  in  Er­melo  took  home  the  top prize  in  the  Royal  Show block  test  competition.

For  owning  the  winner carcass,  she  received  a cash  prize  of  R1 000,  the Royal  Show  medallion,  sash and  champion  certificate, as  well  as  the  Crafcor  Hy­grade  Floating  Trophy.

The  first  reserve  champi­on  carcass  was  a  White Dorper  owned  by  Gert  Löt­ter  Junior,  from  Hofmeyr. He  received  a  cash  prize  of R500,  sash  and  reserve champion  certificate  and  a floating  trophy  presented by  the  Rajpal  Rampersadh family.

Lötter’s  son,  Bennie  re­ceived  a  cash  prize  of R200,  sash  and  certificate for  owning  the  second  re­serve  champion,  another White  Dorper.  Lötter’s White  Dorpers  also  took top  honours  in  group  cate­gories,  winning  champion group  and  reserve  champi­on  group.  His  prizes  includ­ed  cash  prizes  of  R500  and R200  respectively,  sashes and  certificates  and  the Crafcor  Hygrade  Floating Trophy.

Regina  Harmse,  of RCH  Ile  de  France Stud,  was presented  with  the Crafcor  Hygrade Floating  Trophy  by Royal  Agricultural Society  President, Mike  Moncur. Harmse  also received  a  R1000 cash  prize,  Royal Show  medallion, sash  and champion certificate  for breeding  the champion  lamb  at the  2015  Royal Show.PHOTO:  ESTELLE SINKINS
