Fronts & Weather

Weather begins with the sun

Types of Fronts

Cold

Warm

Stationary

Occluded

Cold Front

An animation:

Cold Front

Marked on a map with a blue line and blue

triangles pointing towards the warm air.

Associated with cumulus & cumulonimbus

clouds ahead of the front in the warm air,

producing showers and thunderstorms.

Warm Front

Warm Front

Marked on a map by a red line with red semi-circles pointed towards the cool air (in the direction the warm air is retreating to.)

Generally associated with stratus type clouds, overcast skies, fog, and general rain or snow.

Stationary Front

Marked by alternating blue lines & blue

triangles (pointed in the direction of the warmer

air) and red lines & red semi-circles (pointed in

the direction of the cooler air)

Occluded Front

Marked by a purple line with alternating purple

triangles and purple semi-circles, all pointing in

the direction of the frontal movement.

Weather Tools/Instruments A tool for measuring rainfall

Rain Gauge

A tool used to measure air pressure Barometer

A tool used to show which direction the wind is blowing Weather Vane

A tool used for measuring the humidity or moisture in the air Hygrometer

A tool that measures the force and speed of the wind Anemometer

There are three main types of rainfall –

relief, convectional and frontal.

In all three situations, rainfall occurs

because air rises. Air contains water

vapour and as the air rises it cools and

condensation can occur. This means

that the water vapour returns back into

minute droplets of water and falls as

rain!

Why does it rain?

Convectional rain

Relief rain

Frontal rain

Extras

Some Weather Factors

Wind. This tool measures wind

speed. It is called an anemometer.

Precipitation. Rain, snow, sleet and

hail are all forms of precipitation.

Temperature. Temperature is how

warm or cold it is outside.

Cloud Cover. There are many types

of clouds that form in different

conditions.
