Grade 9
Orientation
Grade Nine Orientation and Retreat During the month of September, our grade nine students participate
in an overnight Orientation/Retreat at Youth Leadership Camps
Canada (YLCC) in Orillia. Senior leadership students prepare and
lead several activities that emphasize teamwork, friendship, and our
Catholic values. It is a great opportunity for the grade nines to meet
some of their teachers, learn about our school tradition, and experi-
ence mentorships with some of our senior students. The two day
Orientation/retreat includes several team building activities, guest
speakers, a campfire, personal reflection time, mass, and much
more. They return to Jean Vanier with confidence as they continue
their transition into high school.
Our Graduates
At Jean Vanier, our students are challenged to do their best. We encourage in each young man and woman the maximum level of individual achievement. Graduates depart with more than knowledge, they leave with confidence, a deeper under-standing of their faith, and an appreciation of the role they will play in shaping tomorrow. Our students pursue different career pathways: university, college, apprenticeship, and the world of work. Leadership
&
Peer Support
Leadership and Peer support is a unique grade 11 elective course at Jean
Vanier. Over the semester, students develop their communication, coaching,
teamwork and conflict management skills and interpersonal relations to bring
out the best in their fellow peers. These enhanced skills are then applied to
special events in the school such as the grade 9 Orientation, Fall Food Drive,
Me to We and the Vow of Silence. Special focus is also given to the complex-
ity of social issues facing the local and global community with students now
being empowered to take immediate action to address these problems.
Our
History
“Through Knowledge Toward God”
Established in 1989, Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School is a vibrant, semestered, co-educational high school. Inspired by our motto, “Through Knowledge Toward God”, we encourage our students to strive for excellence, and to develop their talents in the areas of academics, athlet-ics, technology, leadership, and the arts. Faculty members foster the development of each student, and are committed to ensuring that our young men and women attain a healthy balance of curricu-lar and co-curricular activities during their high school years. Our school is a warm, welcoming, and caring community that celebrates and embraces the living vision of Jean Vanier, a Canadian witness to the gospel. His philosophy is based upon the belief that every human being is a gift from God an deserves to be loved and respected. We will, there-fore, continue to be a school that welcomes and affirms all young people. Our goal is to ensure that all students are provided with a safe, nurturing, and rewarding learning environment that al-lows them to reach their maximum potential.
Our
Mission
A school community formed by Catholic beliefs and traditions, our goal is to ignite our students’ curiosity, imagination and passion. Placing great emphasis on respect and responsibility, we are committed to maintain an atmosphere in which all students have the opportunity to thrive and mature into productive, proud and fulfilled adults who meaning-fully contribute to the world. We challenge our students to make a difference.
Our
Academic Program
Our academic program is both rich and varied. We provide classroom experiences that prepare students for different pathways: university, College, apprenticeship, the workplace and also for life as responsible citizens in a complex and changing world. The Ontario secondary school system has been organized so that each student may select courses suited to his/her interests, abilities and goals for the future. The result is a credit system with many optional subject choices and a strong compulsory academic foundation. Organizational skills, work habits and study skills are emphasized in all our subject areas. We prepare students to become Life-long learners.
“Many students are Ontario Scholars and
Win numerous scholarships to colleges and universities.”
