Galileo Magnet High School “Global Competition Starts Here”

Galileo Magnet High School has been a part of Danville's Public School District since 2002 and offers a curriculum that provides challenges and opportunities

to the students that one may not otherwise find in public education.

Galileo's technologically-focused study programs are on the cutting edge of the constantly evolving technological

world of the 21st century.

• Galileo offered a digital photo photography class for the first time in 2013, giving seniors and juniors the opportunity to learn about the history of the image, the parts of a camera and how to take better pictures. The class is currently developing a photographic tour of downtown Danville, capturing the city's historic gems on camera including the Confederate prison and cemetery, steam project, warehouse district and more.

• Ms. Fields has been using technology to research species of endangered animals for presentations and posters. In addition, students were asked to write a rough draft, and will complete a short term paper using the information that they found on-line. The term paper will have footnotes and will end this footnotes and a Works Cited page by using the MLA style of documentation.

• Ms. Dalton’s Algebra 1 mathematics class uses

laptops to approach the lesson in an interactive way in the “Blast from the Past” unit, while her IB math class uses TI-83+ graphing calculators to find derivatives.

• In Ms. Coyne’s biology class students use Cn3D, which is a

database of computer-generated molecular models that can be manipulated in various ways. The students are able to use the smart board in an interactive way to manipulate the structures.

• At Galileo technology is used to provide students with in-depth instruction in Microsoft Office Professional Suite 2002. She also takes every opportunity to develop her own professional skills. Here she is receiving training on the Mimio Pad from the Instructional Resource Technology Teacher, Wendy Gonzalez.

Ms. Winston Guidance Counselor

• Ms. Winston uses one of the computer labs at Galileo to assist juniors in registering for the SAT and the ACT, achievement tests that high school seniors must take prior to applying to colleges or universities.

Galileo participated in College Application Week during the week of November 26-30, 2012. As part of Virginia’s college access initiative, Galileo worked with all of its seniors to complete and submit online at least one college application. The goal of the program was to get more students applying to colleges early in their senior year. Seniors had on-site resources in the computer lab to get them through the application process along with help from Ms. Winston, college representatives, and college program members.

• Mr. Gibson taught a biology lesson on hemophilia. During this lesson Mr. Gibson was teaching students how to solve genetics problems dealing with blood typing.

Ms. Shanks International Baccalaureate Coordinator Theory of Knowledge Instructor

• Ms. Shanks facilitates online advance placement courses in her classroom. Students use laptops to access the curriculum. Students take a variety of courses ranging from AP psychology, AP statistics, Earth Science, and World Mythology. Students will take the advanced placement exams in May.
