What can be gambled on?

• Well, pretty much anything can be bet on.

• However the main casino games are Blackjack, poker, slots, and table games.

Gambling in China

• Casinos are illegal in mainland China.

• However in 1999 Macau reverted to Chinese control. And gambling licenses are granted there.

Macau

• Macau is a land mass just off the Southern shore of China.

• 11.8 million people made the trip to the Sands casino in Macau 2003.

• There are 14 casinos in Macau.

Why is gambling so popular among Chinese?

• Social Event.

• It is considered an acceptable social activity, even though it is illegal.

• It is a good way to make friends and business connections.

Money

• Financial Reasons.

• Chinese mainlanders for many years were not allowed to try to make money at casinos.

• Gambling at casinos provide a possible way to make money fast.

Boredom

• Many Chinese men after the opening of the market economy became extremely rich, but their wives have limited social activities.

Fun

• It may seem that Chinese business men do not have time to go to casinos, but in fact that is not true.

• Business men make frequent trips to Macau and Southeast Asia.

The Challenge

• The excitement and challenge.

• Gambling, especially at casinos, and especially at blackjack, there is always a possibility to outsmart the casinos.

• Gambling is an activity that creates a lot of excitement.

Gambling in the U.S.

• U.S. gambling mainly takes place in Casinos.

• 27 states currently have casinos and there are only 6 states that have no form of legal gambling.

Betting

• Sports betting is very popular. Including betting on horse races.

• Technically it is legal only in Las Vegas casinos with a sports book. However it occurs all over the U.S. through illegal bookies.

Poker

• Over the past 5 years there has been an explosion in the popularity in poker.

• There are many online sites that appeal to underage gamblers as well as adults who don’t have time to visit casinos.

Why??

• Professional poker players are being turned in to celebrities.

• The last three world series of poker were won by “dead money,” amateurs.

• People play because they can be the next Greg Raymer or Chris Moneymaker.

Facts

• 482 billion dollars was wagered in the United States last year.

• 85% was wagered in casinos.

• The Sands casino in Macau made 36 million in its first ten weeks.

Similarities

• Both Chinese gambling and US gambling mainly take place in casinos.

• Games that are bet on are the same generally. (blackjack, roulette)

• Reasons why people gamble.

Similarities

• Same chips are used.

• Tables are the same.

Differences

• Compared to western casinos, the atmosphere is unglamorous in Macau.

• There is a minimum bet, currently 50 patacas on all games.
