Garchen Rinpoche teaching on the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo, afternoon of Saturday, 1/30/10 (page 1)
First there is a thought of a selfDualistic thoughts create doubt
Eating candy - tastes good and there's a subtle attachment to it, leads to a subtle imprint or habitual pattern arising in the mind, leads to craving, then dualistic tendencies become stronger
People may also grasp religion in the same way, also related to dualistic graspingThen comes thoughts of self and otherThen attachment and aversion arise
When the thought of attachment arises, one can let go of it immediately by recognizing it as being exactly what it is, a thought ofattachmentand then a habitual pattern will not arise
The 5 objects of the sensesThe Words of My Perfect Teacher says that a butter lamp attracts moths but when the insect reaches the flame it is burnt up
Attachment to the body may lead to feeling compelled to buying more and more clothes. But one can recognize the desire to buymore and more as being delusion
The Prayer of Kuntuzangpo refers to "Food, wealth, clothes, home and friends, the five objects of the senses..."Recognize the fault of clinging attachment and give it upThey have their root in self-graspingIf it lies in the self-grasping mind the thought of "I" arises and the habitual patterns are activated
Recognize the clear light of your own mind in the first bardo and you will attain enlightenment immediately
Desire
IGrasping at a self
IAttachment
When desire arises one can partake of the sense pleasure but do not give rise to clinging attachment to that desire, i.e., thinkingabout the object of desire over and over and you cannot be without it
You can meditate on the deity or let your mind rest within its natural state instead of allowing the thought of attachment or aversionarise
If the sense pleasure is not present, it is fine with you, there is no thought of "this is not what I want"
Maintain clear-knowing awareness - that is the wisdom of perfect discernment
We must recognize the small thoughts of aversion that arise - they lead to fear and anger
We must purify the biased thoughts of attachment and aversion
One action results in 4 fruitions - they are explained in The Words of My Perfect Teacher

One action results in 4 fruitions - they are explained in The Words of My Perfect Teacher
Use a method to eliminate anger - patience
Let your consciousness relax in the natural state
When anger arises one simply meditates directly and the wisdom of clarity will arise and the anger will fade away
When anger arises, for beginning practitioners they may need to contemplate that anger is the cause of being reborn in the hellrealms
Eliminate the afflictive emotions - this is what all of the Dharma teachings come down to
The Prayer of Kuntuzangpo says: "When your mind becomes full of pride, there will arise thoughts of competition and humiliation"
This may even arise related to virtuous activity - when one thinks, "Oh, I have done this virtuous deed" over and over againThe prideful mind has a root in self-grasping
Rejoicing in all of the happiness that sentient beings experience is the antidote for the competitive mind
Having the competitive mind will exhaust all of the merit you have accumulatedThe competitive mind is an afflictive emotionLook inside your own mind and see what afflictive emotions you have
When 2 people come into conflict with each other, that results in quarrelingThe karma of pride leads to being reborn in the God realmsAccording to tantric practice, take the afflictive emotion onto the path - place the mind within the View directly and do notinvestigate the afflictive emotion or give it any further thoughtWhen dualistic grasping becomes very thick, jealousy and fighting arise
Hatred = bones
= flesh } when we offer flesh, blood & bones, we are actually offering 3 afflictive emotions
= blood
This lifetime is just like the dream of a single nightWhen you awake in the bardo it is just like awaking from a dream
We think last night's dream was "just a dream"At death the appearances of this life go away and the appearances of the bardo arise
This lifetime, the bardo and the next life are all one when one does not believe in this reality - rather than thinking this lifetime is aconcrete reality we should more so view it as one views a dream
Garchen Rinpoche teaching on the Prayer of Kuntuzangpo, afternoon of Saturday, 1/30/10 (page 3)
The Prayer of Kuntuzangpo says: "Through Kuntuzangpo's prayer, when jealousy and competitive thoughts arise,Do not grasp them as enemies."Overcome them by sustaining mindfulness and the View
Place our obstructors - give rise to love for our obstructorsAll sentient beings can be understood to have been our mothers
The root of virtue which is love can be destroyed by a single moment of anger
Do not grasp
the method is first to question "where does the enemy come from?"
In a past life we mistreated that person and love/benefit transformed into hatred
Your biggest enemy in this lifetime is the person who was your closest friend in a past life
Overcome the hatred
