Environmental Sustainability:

Are These Sustainable?

Economic Sustainability:Collapse of Canada’s Fisheries

Collapse of Cod: 1992

CAUSES:❖ Overfishing (we caught

too much too quickly!)❖ Illegal fishing done by

foreign boats (foreign=from other countries)

❖ The government failed to intervene in time

IMPACTS:❖ 35,000+ people lost their jobs❖ The government finally placed

a moratorium on cod fishing in 1992

RECOVERY:❖ Since 1992, fish stocks have begun recovering, but still a

long way to go!
