» The decision to construct a new building for the local
authorities was naturally also made with the thought
of saving money. The decision was also made in the
context to base the new construction on the overall
concept of sustainability and to set a standard for eco
logical and socially acceptable building in Barnim. (…)
Our complex and sustainable planning already attracts
interest far beyond the borders of our rural district. « Bodo Ihrke, District Administrator of the rural district
Barnim
» As Auditor, planning and building conducting con
sultant for an integral planning, energy efficiency and
sustainability in this project, I‘m convinced, that the
German Sustainable Building Certificate sets a course
to for the qualification of the (German) planning and
building culture. « Dr. Günter Löhnert

» The building is adjacent to an existing 19th cen-
tury brickwork building separated by a “light joint”.
Proportion and size of the new building correspond
to the existing building and complete it as a modern
counterpoint. The location of the property allows a
southern exposure that requires nearly no shading
and supports the energy planning with use of natu-
ral illumination and minimal energy consumption. «

» The new construction of the DEG headquarters shall
impart cosmopolitism and transparency, reliability,
identity and progress to reflect the development
duties of the DEG. The atrium forms the centre of
the architectonical concept and is also the interface
to the public space where events can take place. Up
to two thirds of the atrium’s roof can be opened. The
sevenstorey office building can accommodate a total
of 450 workplaces and is characterized by comply
ing with ecological and healthrelated sustainability
criteria. The implementation of highest energy
standards is clearly shown by the low level of CO2
environmental impact, clearly below that of a compa
rable building. «
