Getting to full-text journal articles
The aim of this guide is to demonstrate how to access a journal (or article) from each of the suppliers who
support Athens authentication through The Knowledge Network (http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk).
Please note that OVID, BMJ and EBSCOhost titles can be accessed on NHS premises without the need to
login.

Introduction
As a first step, it is best always to login to The Knowledge Network with your athens username and
password. Doing this means that The Knowledge Network is able, automatically, to pass your
authentication details to the publishers’ websites for which we have subscriptions. This, in turn, means
that, having logged in once, there should be no further need for you to provide your athens details.
If you have do not have an athens account :
click the Login link in the top right of The Knowledge Network homepage
(http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk) and follow the on-screen guidance.
Beginning a search
After logging in, you can begin your search.
The Knowledge Network offers various ways to search for needed information.
The main Search Box displayed on the homepage offers all of the search options available, while a cut-
down version of the box appears at the top of every other page of the site.

Register To register, select
the “Login /
Register” option
at the top right of
the homepage
and follow the
on-screen
guidance.

A search for known journal titles and articles is easier if you use the Library options. These are available
either from the Search Box under Narrow your search
or, click the Library tab on the homepage

Both options open the Library section of the website.
Journals
You can find a journal
by typing its name
into the search box
or by using the A-Z
journal finder.
Articles
To find journal
articles, type
information about
the article into any or
all of the relevant
fields (title, keyword,
author, etc.)

At the search results page, click the title of the wanted journal or article to link through to the supplier
website, via a small overlay window (otherwise known as a lightbox or the SFX menu).

Click the supplier link (Elsevier Science Direct Complete) to access the full-text articles.
In cases where an item is not available through The Knowledge Network, alternative options for requesting
full text access will be shown in the overlay window.

After clicking the publisher link, you arrive at the BMJ Journals page (in this example it is for the journal
Heart and the process shows what happens if you are using a computer which is NOT on NHS premises.)

If you are using a computer outwith NHS premises and have not logged into The Knowledge Network, you
will be asked to enter your Athens username and password to access the full-text article.
If you are using a computer on NHS premises you will not have to login.

If you are not logged in your will be taken to the login screen below.
Enter your Athens password at the login page (shown below). If you have already logged in to The
Knowledge Network, you should not have to re-enter your login details.

Link through to view the full text of the article. Depending on the supplier, you may be directed to the
journal publisher’s own website or you may require an additional publisher username and password.

You will be taken to Emerald interface. You are not taken to the issue the article is in rather than directly to
the article.
Click the Athens
login link.

At the next window, click the Athens Login link.
If you have already logged in to The Knowledge Network with your Athens username and password you will
be taken straight through to full text access, if not you will be asked to login at this point.

At this point you may be taken back to Emerald’s homepage
You can now browse for the relevant journal and locate the specific article, then click the Full Text or PDF
link to access the full-text.

Clicking the publisher link will open the login page at The Knowledge Network.
You will be taken to informa healthcare journal homepage. You are taken to the journal issue containing
the wanted article rather than to the article itself.

Find the article you are looking for and click on the Full Text or PDF link to access the full-text.

You will be taken to Ingenta page. You are taken to the journal issue rather than to the article itself.
If you have logged in to The Knowledge Network with your Athens username and password you pass
through to the full text article, otherwise you will be asked to login at this point.

Find the article you are looking for and click its title.

The journal homepage on the Taylor & Francis site will open. You will see the issue containing the wanted
article rather than the article itself.

Once logged in, locate the article then click the Full Text or PDF link to access the full text.

lightbox or SFX menu again to link through to the article or title you are trying to access and you should be
taken through to the relevant content now as a logged in user.

be presented with alternative options for requesting the full-text through document delivery services.
