Good practice examples on heat use of biogas plants in Denmark
European Workshop on Heat Use from Biogas Plants –Vienna, Austria, June 12, 2013

Biogas in Denmark
Agricultural biogas plants in Denmark:
22 centralized biogas plants ~ 1 – 4.5 MW
60 farm biogas plants ~ 0.25 – 1 MW
Total production in 2011: 4.1 PJ
46% from centralized plants
27% from farm plants
Agricultural biogas plants treat:
2 ½ mill. ton manure (5% total
manure)
½ mill. ton organic waste
Biogas Heat use in Denmark
In all centralized biogas plants heat is used in internal process and in district heating networks. 2 models:
CHP integrated in the biogas plant – heat sell to DH company
Biogas sell and transported to a district heating CHP plant
In the farm plants heat is used in internal process and in:
District heating networks when possible
Heating the stables or building/houses in the proximities seasonal variation winter/summer
DH in Denmark
60% population is warmed by district heating. And ~ 80% district heating is produced in combined head and power plants
Lemvig biogas plant
Built in 1992, major renovation 2008
Owned by a farmer privately owned cooperative
Treats 615 ton/day (82% manure from ~75 farms and 18% organic waste)
Biogas production: 8.5 million m3/ year (2011)
10.2 million m3/ year (2012)
Lemvig biogas plant
4 digesters with a total capacity of 14,300 m3
RT = 26 days (53 oC)
Hygienization step after the digester
Inlet manure is heated with the hot digestate after the hygienization

Lemvig biogas plant - biogas/heat use
Most of the biogas is sold and transported 4.3 km to the Lemvig decentralized heating plant.
CHP Ulstein-Bergen : 2050 kWel (~ 2.2 MWth)
~18.5 mill kWh heat /year is used at the city ofLemvig (~ 1000 houses)
Part of the biogas is used in a 1560 kWel Caterpillar biogas engine to cover the plant heat internal demandUntil 2013 it was used a 836 kWel/968 kWth CHP Jenbacher unit
Internal heat demand: 3,500 – 4,000 MWh
Since 2011 part of the biogas is sent to the Klinkby district heating plant (8 km) and burnt in a 889 kWel Jenbacher CHP at the Klinkbydecentralized heating plant.
In 2012: 5.6 mill kWh heat /year was produced and used at the city of Klinkby ( ~ 300 houses)
Thanks for you attention!
