NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR
Completed and premiered in the same year, the first performance of this lovely symphony took place in Vienna on December 22, 1808. On the title pages of the first violin part was inscribed the following observation: “Pastoral Symphony or a Recollection of Country Life.” Beethoven had a deep love of nature and would take long walks in the beautiful outskirts of Vienna, including the Vienna Woods. The fifth movement of the symphony is entitled “The Shepherd’s Hymn,” with the additional description of “Thankful feelings after the storm.”
