The project consists of a proposal for an urban architectural development located at the entrance of the greater city. The positioning of the site allows for long lines of sight, and potential direct public interaction at the street level.

As the most interactive of butterflies exist along the edges of their habitat, so too will the building be designed in the spirit of this division. Viewing the surrounding site as a collection of solid, earthy buildings, the building exists as an extension of its solid surroundings, while proving a protected edge enclosure draped in a structure inspired by the butterfly wing.

A design inspired by the client’s balance of both a rugged naturalist paired with an interest in advanced technological learning, the Field Station Residence is arranged in the spirit of this duality.

Designed as a long-term residence, the home is separated into public and private wings. While the public wing is designed as a flexible space with minimal obstructions, the private wing is designed as a flexible space with partition walls allowing the occupant to rearrange the space at any time to suit their needs.

Designed as an assembly for an existing building, the panel is inspired by the living coral of the reefs that surround the site.

At a microscopic level, living coral is formed of a series of layers of coral polyps, each with varying aperture dimensions. The installation, as part of a community welcome center and aquarium, serves as an interactive representation of the site with the ability to simulate the breathing coral through individual wall panels driven by a concealed linear actuator motor driving the motion to create a truly living wall.

In the designing of the building, two design elements were privileged – a building language respectful of the historical district which the building is situated, and a desire for off-street community space.

The building is organized allowing street level public access, both in the building as well as outside the building with a ground-level courtyard pushed back from the street. As the occupant moves vertically through the space, the program becomes increasingly private with privileged views designed to take advantage of the long horizons surrounding the site.
