Brescia is located in an area of level terrain, pro-tected to the north by hills, at the confluence ofthree valleys: Valle Camonica, Valle Trompia andValle Sabbia. The capital is surrounded by a vast provincethat stretches from Lake Iseo with the Francia-corta hills, from Lake Garda and the lowlands tothe Tonale Pass, and to the border with Trentino. The city is the custodian of a wealth of historyand art that spans an extended period of time: itsorigins can be traced back to the Bronze Age,when a Celtic-Ligurian tribe settled on the Cidneohills, but its importance was demonstrated whenit became the capital of Cenomani, around thefourth and fifth centuries BC.In the second century BC, the Romans came intocontact with the local population, and in 49 BC,with Julius Caesar, Brescia became part of theRoman empire. The remains of ancient Brixia are to be found in thevast archaeological park at the foot of the Cidneohills and include Capitolium (Capitoline Temple)erected on the wishes of Emperor Vespasian, theForum (the vast forum square) and the Theatre, animposing building presently being restored. In the old town centre there is also the Museodella Città [City Museum] (Santa Giulia) that issituated in the ancient monastic complex foundedby the Lombard king Desiderius and dedicated toSan Salvatore and Santa Giulia. The building is ar-ticulated around cloisters and churches of differ-ent eras: the Lombard Church of San Salvatore, the Coro delle Monache [Nun’s Choir](mid-fif-teenth century) entirely frescoed by variousartists including Floriano Ferramola and Paoloda Caylina the Younger; Santa Maria in Solarium(second half of the twelfth century) which housesthe famous Croce di Desiderio [Cross of Desire]and the Church of Santa Giulia, now used asconference centre. The Late Middle Ages section re-minds us of the presence in Brescia of the Lom-bards and Franks. The Pinacoteca civica [City Picture Gallery],Tosio-Martinengo, temporarily closed for main-tenance and restoration, tells the story of Bres-cian art from the fourteenth to eighteenth cen-turies. Considerable space is devoted to themasterpieces of the great age of the Renais-sance, Foppa to Romanino, Moretto andSavoldo; the age of style and the work of Gia-como Ceruti, the Pitocchetto [called the Pictori-alist] are widely represented, but there are alsoworks by Raffaello, Solario, Lotto. Also importantis the graphics section that documents the his-tory of European engraving from the fifteenthcentury to the present. On the Cidneo hills rises that which came to benamed the Castello [Castle], one of the vastestof fortified complexes of northern Italy, with tow-ers, ramparts, courtyards, buildings, drawbridgesand cellars constructed in different periods.Around the medieval nucleus, composed of theTorre della Mirabella [Mirabella Tower], by thepowerful Mastio Visconteo and of the drawbridge, the Venetians built the circular towers and the im-posing ramparts. The Castello is now set up asa public park, surrounded by gardens, and ishome to the Museo delle armi antiche [Mu-seum of ancient weapons] Luigi Marzoli andthe Museo del [Museum of the] Risorgimento. In the Middle Ages the civil and religious centreof the town moved from the Forum to the squarenow named after the Brescian Pope Paolo VI, also
