A Brief Synopsis of Activities2009-2011

National Scout Movement of Armenia (HASK)

HASK Structure

•Organization is headed by an Executive committee which is elected by the national assembly (representatives from regions within Armenia) every two years.

•The Executive Committee consists of 5-9 members.

•Current President is Hratchia Shemavonyan

•Central Scout Executive will usually have 5-9 members.

•Currently the Chief Scout of HASK is Romanos Petrosian.

•CSE coordinates all scouting activities in Armenia (at the National level)

•Holds weekly meetings

•Organizes leadership seminars

•Bi-monthly Hiking treks

•Coordinates Regional Camps

•Hold annual Pan-Armenia Jamboree

Main Issues•Average scout has problems with paying for

expenses incurred.▫Scout Uniforms, books▫Camping and hiking costs▫No middle class!!

•Lack of funding by Government agencies

•Leader quality and quantity (being addressed)

A Permanent Leadership Training School for Adult and Junior Leaders

Funded by WOSM’sEric Frank Fund for the Eurasia Region

Motivation and Justification

• In order to recruit new scouts (and hold on to the ones we already have), we need strong/new leaders.

•Leaders usually come from your scouting base or previous organization members.

Seems like the famous Chicken or the Egg question

Motivation and Justification•A permanent solution to the leadership problem

will solve many problems.•Train and re-train leaders

•Solution: A permanent “scouting school”.

Motivation and Justification

Outline of Program

•One curriculum for Junior leader (ages14-17).

•Another curriculum for Adult leader (18-30).▫Young Women (18-25)▫Young Men (21-25)

•Course are held over a three month period.

•Repeated 3 times a year (off Dec.15 -March.15)

Outline of Program

•Junior Leaders will be targeted for the post of Patrol Leader Assistant Scout Master.

•Adult leaders Scout Masters Troop Committee members General Organizational Support

•Filling the full spectrum of necessary leaders and positions.

Outline of Program

•Course consists of:

▫Eight five-hour seminar sessions held weekly

▫One 3-day camp held in the middle of the course.

▫One 3-day camp at the end of the course.

Junior Leader Program•Seminars:

▫Weekly activity preparation.

▫Scout Skills (up to 1st class).

▫Patrol management

▫Methods of imparting knowledge and skills.

Junior Leader Program• Camps:

▫Practical Skills Knots and lashings Orienteering Cooking Hiking and Backpacking

▫Other outdoor skills.

▫Refresher and “Testing”

▫Graduation.

Junior Leader Program•After Graduation (minimum):

▫Able plan and execute a weekly patrol agenda.

▫Scout Skills (up to 2nd class).

▫Work with youth in their age group (and younger)

Adult Leader Program• Seminars:

▫ Very hands on.

▫ Practical situations.

▫ Crises Management.

▫ Troop Management.

▫ Organizational Skills.

▫ Recruiting.

▫ Working with Parents.

Adult Leader Program• Camps:

▫Practical Skill. Advanced Scouting Skill Planning for Hiking and

Camping trips

▫Activities organized by the participants.

▫Refresher and “Testing”.

▫Graduation.

Adult Leader Program• After Graduation (minimum):

▫ Working knowledge of troop management and access to materials.

▫ Plan and Execute Troop activities. ▫ Able to hold membership drives in

local areas.

▫ Manage Senior Patrol leaders.

▫ Represent organization.

Ultimate Goal for Adults

• Introduction of Woodbadge in Armenia

•We have 2 beaded scouts (formerly from BSA).

•Possibility to have a course director from BSA.

Current Status

•Four semesters have already been concluded.

•As a direct result of this program 3 new units have been established (over 600 new scouts).

•The organization has a stronger leader base.

Future Plans

• Include leader-exchange from more NSOs.

•Expand the program to Eurasia Level• Leaders: The Next Generation• Defining the Leader for the 21st Century

Current Status

• Next Seminar series starts in March.

• Trainers from European NSOs (Denmark and UK) have attended the previous semester and will attend the up coming camp.

Pan-Armenian Jamboree

•Homenetmen is an organization in the Diaspora that has over 25000 members in over 100 cities all over the world.

•Homenetmen provides scouting (as a charting organization) for scouts of Armenian descent/heritage.

•We host the Jamboree held every 4 years.

•560 scouts from 18 countries participated.

•Organizing committee was mostly from HASK leadership.

•Highlights included• Scout Rally• Cultural Day• Scout Olympics
