Health Coaches must be able to communicate in a way that emphasizes the
power of the client. These three communication styles –directing, guiding,
and following – are a continuum within which a coach may operate. In this
webinar, we’ll discuss each of the three communication styles and situations
which call for the coach to adapt their communication to meet the client
where they are.

Assess where a coach may be within the communication continuum.

Listening for Change Talk in Health Coaching

Description
Health coaching requires active listening to effectively communicate with
clients. Active listening and authentic presence allows the coach to pinpoint
client change talk and reflect it back to clients in an effort to further explore
behavior change. Change talk refers to client self-statements that indicate a
desire, ability, reason, or need for the client to change. Learn how
motivational interviewing strategies can help to elicit change talk among
clients.
Objectives
Identify potential client change talk statements.
Build upon active listening skills to be authentically present.
Describe motivational interviewing strategies that could be used to elicit
change talk.

Target Audience Health coaches, community health workers, lay health advisors, practitioners, nurses, counselors, health educators, and anyone who would like a motivational and productive relationship with patients.
