What is Health Data for All Ages (HDAA)?
•An interactive set of tables presenting data on the health and well-being of the U.S population.
•Recently developed by NCHS, with a primary focus on major health concerns across age groups and life stages.
•Uses a powerful platform to make detailed, complex data accessible to all users.
A tool for everyone
•Presents pre-tabulated statistics on specific sub-populations without requiring users to analyze raw data or know statistical formulas.
•Estimates are presented by:– Geographic location– Age– Race/ethnicity– Gender– Year
Data sources
•Total counts– Births (NVSS – Natality)– Deaths (NVSS – Mortality)
•Population surveys– National Health Interview Survey
(NHIS)– National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey (NHANES)– Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System (BRFSS)
Data sources (continued)
•Health Care Surveys– National Hospital Discharge Survey
(NHDS)– National Ambulatory Medical Care
Survey (NAMCS)– National Hospital Ambulatory Medical
Care Survey (NHAMCS)
Considerations
•Data are analyzed before release.– Software being used cannot calculate
precision estimates appropriately for surveys with complex sampling designs.
•Estimates are 3-year averages.– Pooling gives the estimates greater
precision.– Larger number of specific sub-groups
estimates can be presented.
Considerations (continued)
•Data are formatted into interactive data tables.– User can format as needed.– Timely updates of the data can be
released on the Internet.
Data suppression
•Relative standard error – (RSE) = (SE/estimate) * 100%– Data not shown when RSE > 30%
•Sample size– Vital Statistics: suppression for < 20
events– Surveys: suppression for sample size
< 25
Beyond 20/20™ software
•Data dissemination software that allows interactive presentation of data.
•Retrieve data in multiple formats depending on need:– Tables– Graphs (bar, line, pie)– Maps
Flexibility of use
•Two different ways to use the data– Use the tables online
Quick accessGeneral purpose use of data
– Download tablesTo access same data many timesTo map the data, click the “display
map” button

Finding table of interest
•Search for a specific topic– May get specific topic from a larger
table.– Need to specify to see all tables
available.
•Browse the folder topics of interest– Titles arranged alphabetically, with
information on geographic and time coverage.

Table and dimension details
•Information useful to understand the data being presented available for many table components.– Overall table information– Variables– Categories within variables
•Click on the icon to locate this information.
Sorting
•Sort items in a variable by using the sort buttons ( ).– Put the item you want to sort by in the
columns (along the top).– Put the variable you want sorted in the
rows (along the left side).– Click on the arrow that is associated
with the sort you want (ascending or descending).
Charting
•Create a chart using the chart button.– Before charting, it is easiest to
customize the table to show only those data you wish to display in the chart.
•Change chart options using “Actions” menu item “Select Chart Type.”
Printing
•Click on the print button or
•Chose “printable Version” from the “Actions” menu
•Use your Internet browser’s Print command to print.
Exporting the data
•Only the data being displayed in the table view will be exported– Nest all variables needed in rows and
columns– Clink on the “Microsoft Excel Format”
button
•Other formats available in the “Actions” menu
Technical information
•Refer to “Technical Notes and Source Information” in the instructions and publications folder for more in-depth information about the source data.
Help/Contact Us
•To receive technical support with Beyond 20/20 software and the tables e-mail: hdaa@cdc.gov
Sample problems
•Find the incidence of lung cancer mortality among non-Hispanic white and non-Hispanic black women in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina in the most recent data available.
•Graph the percent of untreated cavities among people by poverty status and age.
•Rank states by current smoking status among non-Hispanic white men aged 18-44 in 2001-2003.
Mapping
•Get a table downloaded to Beyond 20/20 browser.– Find and click “For offline use of above
tables.”– Select table to map and either open or
download.
•Once table is opened in browser, click the map button .
•Can browse through categories of other variables.
