Job Fair Set For August 1
Senior Services has received a grant to improve the automated check-in systems ateach of our four senior centers. A systemcalled MySeniorCenter will soon be utilized. This program is specifically designed to helpour sta> members manage the various sign-ups and sign-ins, and improve the way wereport our services to our various funders, donors and our board.
This system is very similar to the Navigatorsystem currently in place. Senior Center members will receive a new small keytag whichwill be used to sign in at the kiosks. The keytag will allow members to sign in each dayfor events and classes. The goal is to becomemore eDcient in tracking membership andparticipation information.
Center sta> and administration are just beginning the training process for the transition to MySeniorCenter. The change will
be taking placeover the next fewmonths, with eachcenter changingone at a time, toallow a smoothtransition for allparticipants. Thefirst center toswitch over will be Orchard Park around July17.
Please watch for more information at yourcenters in regard to timing of this transition.Center directors will be checking the accuracyof member information, issuing new keytags, and showing members how the new systemworks as the process goes along.
“We look forward to seeing all the possibilities the MySeniorCenter system willprovide,” says Karen Dao, director of programs.

Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic (long term) conditionmarked by abnormally high levels of sugar(glucose) in the blood. People with diabeteseither do not produce enough insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy neededfor daily life, or cannot use the insulin that theirbodies produce. As a result, glucose builds upin the bloodstream. If left untreated, diabetescan lead to blindness, kidney disease, nervedisease, heart disease, and stroke.
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases(NIDDK), diabetes a>ects 25.8 million Americans.
While an estimated 18.8 million have beendiagnosed with diabetes (both type 1 and type
2), unfortunately, 7 million people (or nearlyone third) are unaware that they have type 2diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC) recognize diabetes as the7th leading cause of death in the U.S.
There are 2 major types of diabetes:Type 1. Also known as juvenile or insulin dependent diabetes, type 1 diabetes occurswhen the cells of the pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin are destroyedby the immune system. Type 1 diabetes can bemanaged, but it cannot be cured.Type 2. This form of the disease makes up 90%of all cases of diabetes. It usually develops inadulthood. It occurs when the pancreas cannotmake enough insulin to keep blood glucoselevels normal and is made worse by poor foodchoices, a sedentary lifestyle, and being overweight.

Hello Everyone…
Hope you are enjoying this nice weather. I will say I know we are at Northeast, because I havebeen getting positive feedback on all the special events that we have been having these past fewmonths. For April, we had the play “Mad At Jesus,” which was written by our own Ms. ConnieStone, and it was awesome. For May, we had our Mother’s Day Dinner & Fashion Show which wasso nice. It was great to see some new members a part of the show. For June we had our “MotownMadness” at the Boys & Girls Club. I will say each year it gets bigger and better. We also had ourFather’s Day Dinner and Fashion Show which again was a success. I just want to say Thank You toall who help make the center run smoothly. If you feel like what you do does not get noticed…trustme, it is noticed. From buying co>ee, helping with the flowers and lawn care, calling Bingo, answering the phones, teaching a class, serving on our Advisory Council or Special Events Committee, and even those that donate towards an event…It is noticed. Thank you, Thank you,Thank you…I am truly blessed to be among a caring, compassionate, very involved center. Withthat said if you have any suggestions, concerns, or comments on helping bring more fun and moremembers to our center, please do not hesitate to stop by the oDce and share your ideas orthoughts. They are always appreciated.
Be Blessed, Carnesha Tucker, Center Director

Greetings Everyone!!
“Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! I wish that summer would always be here!!” Ibelieve it was Nat King Cole who sang that tune in the 1960’s. I hope you are enjoying the longdaylight hours and the seemingly relaxed, casual times that summer is supposed to be. Are you going to family or school reunions? There is a neat little book by Bret Nicholaus titled “TheConversation Piece.” It is filled with creative questions to stimulate the mind. Pondering questionsmake times spent together even more interesting. You will get to know the secret little desires andwishes of the people you love. Try a few the next time you are together with family and friends.1. If you could have a memento of any famous person, what would you want it to be?2. Everyone hears discussions that they consider boring. What topic can put you to sleep morequickly than other?3. If you could go back in time and somehow avert any tragedy in American history, what incidentwould you choose to prevent?4. If drinking fountains could dispense another liquid, what would you want it to be?5. If you suddenly became a star and had to choose a stage name, what name would it be?6. If you had lived in the Old West, what do you think your occupation would have been?7. What special feature that doesn’t yet exist would you like to see added to automobiles?8. In a spelling bee, what word would you hope you would not have to spell?
Have a safe and enjoyable summer!!!!Diane Nutt, Center Director
