The region surrounding Nagpur was cut off through the ages from the large empires of the Gangetic Plains by inaccessible ranges of the Vindhyas and

Satpudas. The Central Indian Forests have survived today because the indigenous tribal model of development did not require destruction of forests. Even today a greater proportion of tribal population inhabits this region. These

facts continue to affect socio-economic development of the area today.

However lately Nagpur has acquired the tag of `Zero Mile City’ & a cosmopolitan character. Marks created by various communities in the city deserve to be preserved for the posterity.

Gonds controlled the large area of Gond-Wana before Bhonsales took over in 1743. Bhonsales were Maratha warriors

with close ties with western India. As such they established themselves at Nagpur at the western edge of their large

kingdom. Golden period of Bhonsale regime was 1775 to 1800 during which, in a relatively short period, many prominent

public works such as tanks & temples came into existence.
