Zita
A minha gratidão, pois, à
neste livro, pelas indicações que me deram, nomeadamente: Albino Sequeira,
trabalho: André Varela Remígio, Inês Thom as Almeida, Luís Laforga Granja,
penitenciando-me caso tenha cometido alguma omissão involuntária.

Summary
Ayear before the 1835 Iaw. that determined the establishment of public
cemeteries located afar from the population and separated from churches.
already was planned the construction of two parochial cemeteries in Viana
do Castelo: one situated in a yard next to the former "Santa Ana" convent and
another one nearby the former 'Agostinhos" convent Altogether. in 1835, the
Government made the former "Santo Antônio" convent wood available to the
Town Hall in order to establish there a cemetery that would serve the purpose
of both Viana urban Períshes, Despite the aforementioned wood being already
enclosed and presenting streets. the Town Hall pleaded the lack of monetary
means in order to establish such a cemetery. Diverse vicissitudes forced the
subject into oblivion. until the arrival of new city council representatives in
1839.The work involved in the construction of a dividing wall by the forrner's
convent wood. occurred alongthe year in 1840. The first burials date back to
January 1841. Altogether. in august 1841. t he Town Hall ôecíded to relocate the
cemetery to the "Santo Antônio" field.which belonged to the Municipality.
Despite an estímete. this relocation never took plece.

Synopsis I Summary
The former convent's wood cemetery kept functioning until May 1842, but
eventually carne to be prahibited by Civil Govemor's order, claiming that the
necessary work hadn't been concluded. Temporarily, Viana's departed might
once more be sepulchred in closed spaces like "Santo António & Carmo"
convent cloisters as well as Saint Francis Bratherhood that, despite being
designated as "cernetery", was actually, a covered space, annex to the former
"Saint António" convent. ln fact, while, in 1840, Viana's Town Hall took care
of the public cemetery construction work, the Saint Francis Bratherhood
requested to the Government the right to possess a private cemetery. Where
once was located a church, were ordered to be made 5big openings facing
north, 2 loopholes on the roo f, as well as a 'Big gate' facing south. The
permit allowing this enclosed space to become a cemetery was conceded
in September 1842, fulfilling the requirements of being well ventilated,
located outside the city and next to the public cemetery. ln September 1843,
the municipal cemetery still under prahibition, was requested superior
authorization in arder to bless the Saint Francis Bratherhood cemetery.
3years later, the authorization was given to bless an altar with the Holy Christ
image, which meanwhile was put there.
ln February 1844, after impravement works, was cancelled the prahibition
fram which suffered the municipal cemetery (therefore allowing burials),
having the Town Hall requested to the Govemment the "Santo António"
convent church concession in order to serve the purpose of mortuary chapeI.
Aconnexion between the church and the municipal cemetery was also
planned, allowing the aforementioned cemetery to gain bigger acceptance
fram the people, not least because, according to a report fram 1845 "Poor
people burials)) took place "tiee of charge around the chapei of ((Almas)) and
((most ofthe well-endowed)) to be buried by the former "Carmo" and Saint
Francis burial graunds. Therefore, in early 1850, Viana's municipal cemetery
would remained mostly "unused',
The Saint Francis Secular Bratherhood private cemetery functioned in a
covered space until summer 1855, when, due to a cholera epidemie, the Civil
Governor ordered it closed. ln this context of heavy mortality, the municipal
cemetery suffered rushed construction works and was inaugurated once more.
ln August 1855, the Town Hall is finally able to acquire the wished terrain in
order to connect the former convent church to the cemetery.
ln Apri11856, and because the Saint Francis Brotherhood cemetery didn't meet
the requirements established by law, the Government gave the order to keep
it closed and exhume the sepulchral remains in a 5years' time period. The
Saint Francis Bratherhood objected willing to maintain at alI costs a private
cemetery, therefore opting to relocate it to their own garden, justifying the act
by claiming that such private cemeteries were allowed in the city of Oporto.
ln October 1857, the Government authorized this new cemetery and, by May
1858, the plan by António Martins do Couto Viana was appraved. However, in
September of the sarne year, the construction was suspended for disagreement
between the brotherhood and the master builder. ln February of the following
year, the construction work started again on a costs estimate of 840$000.
By then, most of the municipal cemetery remained unused, taking that
the Town Hall was still doing in 1857 "area (wood) rental'. However, already
you could see some tombstones and the volume of burials in this cemetery
beginning to be constant.
The Saint Francis Bratherhood new cemetery license arrived by November
1859, being also blessed at the time despite the first burials dating back to April
1859. ln May 1860, was approved the corresponding regulation.
o CEMITÉRIO DE VIANA DO CASTELO I História, Arte, Património
By the end of 1860, the municipal cemetery's mortuary chapeI was in
construction or already achieved. As for the Saint Francis Brotherhood
cemetery's one, it was being concluded by January 1863, being blessed in
November 28t h of 1864. However the Saint Francis Brotherhood mortuary
chapeI is not anymore found at its originallocation, the private cemetery
having later suffered an expansion work using an area located behind where
once was found the aforementioned chapeI, therefore ending next to the
municipal cemetery and even presenting a gate connecting them. There are
records of other improvement works related to the Saint Francis Brotherhood
Cemetery, like cypress plantation, the restauration and expansion of the so
called "catacornbs' - superimposed shelves meant to store coffins and located
on the sectíons' edges, or the sepulchral enclosure widened to the north west,
following the realignment of the actual "Dr Tiago de Almeida" Street (end of
the XIX century). At the Municipal Cemetery, by its non-Catholic section, in
1876, would come to be a small Britannic cemetery.
ln tenns of spatial conception, Viana do Castelo Cemetery - encompassing
the Saint Francis Brotherhood private and municipal cemeteries - was clearly
influenced by the elitist Lapa's Cemetery in Oparto, above ali taking into
account the North section municipal cemetery family vaults: one of the most
extensive, yet homogeneous and interesting in Portugal. By the lower tray of
the Saint Francis Brotherhood Cemetery, the catacombs disposition and its
conclusions shaw a clear Galician influence.
The first tombs of a certain dimension erected in Viana do Castelo Cemetery,
whether by the municipal side or the Saint Francis Brotherhood are from
the 1860 decade. Until the first years of the XX century, were here erected
monuments of relatively great interest. By its monumentality, artistic
relevance, or for other motives, stand out, amongst other things:
· At the back section of the municipal cemetery, where is integrated to its
centre the mortuary chapei, the obelisk-chapel fram "Ana Cândida Furtado de
Medonça Dantas' (also known as "Câmara Leme" family vault), from 1868, and
the other one of the sarne kind erected in 1871 at the sectíon's opposite end, by
order of the well-endowed transport entrepreneur "Sebastiâo da Silva Neves",
and also the chapei belonging to the influent "Barbosa & Silva" farníly,
· By the side section of the municipal cemetery, the family vaults of "José de Sá
Sotomaior Leones', "Maria Cruz Azevedo", "Gaspar Falcão de Castro", 'Consíglíeri
Mendes Veloso", and "Fernando António Zamith".
· By the Municipal Cemetery's central quarters, the family vault's shaped
canopy fram "Belchior Soares da Silva", and "Manuel Pereira da Rocha Viana",
the family vault of "Madre Maria da Conceição" (which great warshipping
might be measured by the numerous existing ex-votos inside the mortuary
chapei), and also the various pedestais topped by allegoric statues Faith, Hope,
Charity, Gratitude, and "Saudade", almost all from the famous Ceramic Fabric
of 'Devcsas'.
· By the Saint Francis Brotherhood section, the chapeI emulating a ruin,
from the writer andjournalist "José Caldas", as well as the "Velho Barreto"
family vault (restauration of a private tomb that already existed by the "Santo
António" Convent's period).
