PASTOR’S LETTER Good Advent People of Holy Cross, A “Catch 22" is a “no-win” situation; given 2 choices choosing either one means you lose. Mary hears an angel’s words, “Be not afraid. You have found favor with God.” So far, so good. “You will be with child and give birth to a son and give him the name Jesus.” The more the angel talked, the more Mary’s innocence was transformed, first curiosity and then, to terrifying fear. “But how can this be, since I am a virgin?” “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you… For nothing is impossible with God.” Christmas is all about God breaking into unsuspecting hearts. Alone and vulnerable, Mary is thrown into a Catch 22. She is given the awesome responsibility of birthing Jesus thrusting her into unimaginable uncertainty. It is not accidental that the angel’s first words to her are: “Be not afraid.” This moment God is saying, “Be not afraid.” “Jesus comes to be born into every life, yours, mine, ours, theirs – every life that knows the danger, the risk, and the terror of Catch 22. The incredible news of this season of longing is that Jesus will be born in any life that will give him manger space. That’s it! All God asks is a little manger space. “Be not afraid.” When the surgeon walks in with a clipboard crammed with charts, “Be not afraid.” When life falls apart around you, and you don’t know whether to pray or to run, “Be not afraid.” When you find yourself as did Mary, hearing wonderful news that God loves you and has a purpose for your life and longs to be born within your soul, feel the terror warmly on your neck but say “Yes” to God. “I won’t be afraid.” Blessings, Fr.

"No temas". No tendré miedo ". Bendiciones, P.adre Jude Michael

PRAYERS

Loving God, Holy One, Your desire is for our wholeness and well-being. We hold in tenderness and prayer the collective suffering of our world at this time. We grieve precious lives lost and vulnerable lives threatened. We ache for ourselves and our neighbors, standing before an uncertain future. We pray: may love, not fear, go viral. Inspire our leaders to discern and choose wisely, aligned with the common good. Help us to practice social distancing and reveal to us new and creative ways to come together in spirit and in solidarity. Call us to profound trust in your faithful presence, You, the God who does not abandon, You, the Hold One, breathing within us, breathing among us, breathing around us in our beautiful yet wounded world. -Chris Koellhoffer, IHM

Dear Faith Formation Families: Christmas Season is upon us and let’s just face it, most of the year has been different. I’m sure this Christmas Season will be different as well. While we continue to socially distance ourselves, let’s try to remember NOT to socially distance from Jesus. Let’s try to stay near Him, in our prayers, our actions, our giving and most of all, in our hearts. Gift exchanging now has a new meaning. I asked my 3-year old Goddaughter, “what do you want for Christmas”? In her baby voice, she responded “Nannie, I just want you for Christmas”. Her baby soft spoken words and response made me reflect on a deeper meaning of the gospel in this Sunday’s readings. The Gospel is from Luke 1:26-38. Could infinite love have gone any further? Our creation, the fact that we exist as human beings on earth, is a great gift to us on the part of God. Of what value could eighty, a hundred, even seven hundred years of a continuously happy life on this earth be for us if we learned that we had to depart life forever one day? In a world tormented by sin and its evil effects our normal span of life would be less satisfying. However, when God created us, he so planned that our stay here would be but a stage, a stepping stone in fact, toward our everlasting home. We are well aware indeed of the lengths to which God's love has gone in order to make us his children and heirs to his kingdom. Are we, however, grateful to him for the love he has shown us? Are we honestly and sincerely trying to make ourselves worthy of the great future he has in store for us? Today is a suitable occasion to look right into our hearts, to see how we stand with God. During the week we shall be keeping the feast of Christmas. The Baby in the manger will remind us of what God has done and is still doing for us. What are we doing in return? Have we shown our gratitude by living as true followers of Christ? If most of us must answer: "no," this is the time to change our course and return to the right road once more. God is asking this of us today. Shall our answer be: "behold here I am Lord, your humble and grateful servant, let it be done to me according to your word?” Have a Merry Christmas! ¿Qué estamos haciendo a cambio? History of our Holy Cross Hispanic Ministries

In August 2018, Fr. Jude Michael and Fr. Calixto scheduled a meeting with the leaders and coordinators of the groups, movements and ministries that were operating in our parish at that time. At that meeting, each of the group leaders, 21 at that time, stated their objective, the work they were doing, and the number of members. The Hispanic Ministry of Holy Cross was formed, including Liturgy, Permanent Specific Groups, Temporary Specific Groups, and Special Services. In the first formal meeting, various methods of operation were presented, and those chosen still exist. The leaders include Father Calixto Salvatierra, the director Enrique Romero, deputy director Sara España, secretary Ana Soriano, treasurer Connie Romero and Deacon Bernardo Buzeta.
