Daily Spelling Read the text below.
Write it out in your best handwriting. When you come across a –tial/cial word record it in a different colour.
Imperative vs Modal Verbs
Both these types of verbs are appropriate for our persuasive leaflet about Hartlepool.
They convey a message to the reader which are the must do activities (imperative) and the level of possibility, obligation and recommendation (modal) of doing a range of activities.
Modal Verbs• Give information about the mood of a verb, expressing such things as:1. Obligation (You MUST be home by midnight, he OUGHT to pay before leaving)2. Recommendation (You SHOULD ring and apologize)3. Possibility (I MAY do as you ask, but then again I MAY not)• They change the meaning! For example, ‘may’ and ‘can’ operate in the present tense and ‘might’ and ‘could’ are in the past.
• The modal verbs express possibility or certainty. There are nine verbs in this group:
• can; could, shall; should; may; might; must; will; would
Have you every asked someone if you ‘can’ do something, instead of ‘may’?Student: Can I go to the loo?Teacher: I don’t know, can you?
Imperative Verbs
The Imperative creates mood and gives us a command (Can also be seen as an instruction)
Chill out!Do as I say!Don’t eat the daisies! Please be quiet!
My turn
Consider this from the information we used yesterday.
You can walk along the impressive walls, as the soldiers once did to watch invaders, and appreciate the stunning views. Modal Verb – indicating possibilityImperative Verb – instructing what they do
Notice the writer uses a mix of both to tell the reader the attraction, the possibility and the action they may do there.
My turn
Consider this from the information we used yesterday.
You and the kids can see and smell what a street might have been like, and even try on some armour.
Modal Verb – indicating possibilityImperative Verb – instructing what they do
Notice the writer uses a mix of both to tell the reader the attraction, the possibility and the action they may do there.
Your turn
On the next slide you will find a range of images that show attractions tourists may visit during a trip to Hartlepool. If you aren’t sure what you can do at some of the attractions… find out!
Create sentences about these attractions using a healthy mix of imperative and modal verbs to try and persuade those tourists in! You may think of other attractions too. Add as many as you can to really allow your leaflet to ‘pack a punch.’
Example
Book your family tickets to watch National League team Hartlepool United.
You may even catch a glimpse of the infamous mascot H’Angus.
Enjoy a half-time treat of pie and chips or a Bovril to keep your hands warm in those nippy winter months!
SwimmingThis half term our P.E. sessions should have been swimming.
Seeing as we can’t attend right now, have a go at solving some of these puzzles to help you remember some important rules
for when we can get back to swimming.
