GRADUATION of 2011The Homebush Boys High class of 2011
marked the end of their schooling with a grad-uation ceremony and presentation of aca-demic, sporting and co-curricular awards.
One hundred and ninety three stu-dents received their Certificates and will now complete the external Higher School Certificate examination in early October.
The major academic awards went to Gary Zhang, Austin Kwon, Youseff Latash, Da-vid Zou and Loukas Koungoulos, with Joel Todd being named ‘First in Year 12’. Andrew Depta, who was recently selected in the Aus-tralian Schoolboys Football team to tour Eng-land, was named ‘Sportsman of the Year’.
A variety of speeches were delivered by Year 12 advisor Ms Edan Caramancion, School Captain Erkan Altun, Vice-Captain Ben Eisikovich and Se-
nior Prefect Patrick Gallagher, relating their experiences during six years at the ‘bush.
The evening was complemented with musical performances by Dylan Par-cell, Jack Jones and Peter Brimfield. The evening ended with the haunting musical sounds of a traditional Indian performance by Gursagar Singh. School Principal, Tim Jurd, wished all the boys a successful future to conclude the Diamond Jubilee Seventy-Fifth Anniversary graduation ceremony.

PRINCIPALS REPORT
Welcome to another Bulletin and again it shows the wide range of remarkable activities in which our school students participate, and often excel.
HSC students deserve praise
The HSC exam has been going well. Largely due to the excellent preparation of the students but also due to the fantastic team of Board of Studies supervisors led by Presiding Officer Gary Power.
Gary has been a teacher but most of his career has been dedicated to elite football refereeing. This calm, self-disciplined, organised manner he has used to sup-port and encourage the students. Well done Gary and your excellent team of invigilators.
It is great to see the students and staff supporting char-ities. The SRC spent their lunchtimes and after school making pink ribbons to sell on assembly. This initiative was followed by a mufti-day and some staff and stu-dents showed their true colours by wearing pink. The students raised over $1300 and this will go to breast-cancer research. Well done SRC!
The staff are also trying to help medical research with a num-ber growing moustaches for “Movember”.
Please go to the Movember website (au.movember.com) and search the staff team “Bushy Boys” and donate to assist the re-search into prostate cancer cure.
Yes, I have joined the team and shaved my beard so that I can grow a “mo”. Not a great look!
Music Program Underway
The school is thrilled to have welcomed our new Musical Pro-gram Director, Ms Tracy Burjan. Tracy started auditions on Fri-day 28 October and was impressed by the interest and enthu-siasm of the students.
Tracy is an experienced musician, tutor and conductor and led many instrumental programs especially in Concord West and Homebush West Public Schools. Tracy hopes to have a Band, percussions group and choir in training as soon as possible. Tracy is also keen to start a comprehensive tuition program in place for those students who wish to study an instrument. Tra-cy has an extensive network of music tutors available (many of whom are ex-students of Homebush) ready and waiting to start training.
If interested in joining up then give your name to Mr Smith or me. By the way we need trumpet players and an electric base player.
Korean Exchange 2012
Early in Term 1, next year, Cheng Ju High School will be send-ing a group of students from Seoul to Sydney to join with Homebush in celebrating our growing “sister school” relation-ship. The students will be here for 10 days and I am looking for families who will host a “home stay” student or staff member for about 9 nights. During their stay the students and staff will go to the city, Blue Mountains and the beach with their home stay buddies. Please contact me if you can host a student and please be aware that all these students can speak English and each host family will receive a levy for expenses of $250.
Contact the school and indicate your interest in Korean Ex-change 2012. Homebush students and staff will be going to Korea in August next year. This trip is heavily subsidised and we hope that homestay families will be involved.

iHEAR study 2009 – Report Released
In 2009 Mr Hilliard assisted the National Accoustics Laborato-ries (www.nal.gov.au) conduct vital hearing testing on young adults and many of our students volunteered for this com-prehensive health research. The research was in response to growing community concern that exposure to loud sound during everyday leisure activities (in particular, loud music ex-posure from personal stereo players iPods etc, night clubs and rock concerts), may be compromising the hearing of young Australians.
The full report can be accessed at www.nal.gov.au (“iHEAR” – “Investigation of Hearing Loss Epidemiology, Attitudes and Recreation”). Most significantly, the preliminary results sug-gest:
• The prevalence of hearing loss in the target age group may be lower than reported in previous studies, and,
• No association between reported leisure – sound exposure and hearing loss, or inner ear function, has been identified in the preliminary analysis
Year 7 Geography Excursion to the
Blue Mountains World Heritage Park
The day started early for many of us, at 8 in the morning. The buses rolled in and were put in a group with 7D and Mr Pearson. The bus ride was interesting as everyone was trying to find the best time and boredom killer.
We arrived at the foot of the Blue Mountains over the Nepean River, yet it was another hour and a half to reach Katoomba Falls. Our first stop along the way was the famous Katoomba Edge Cinema. We viewed a deeply interesting documentary of The Blue Mountains, The Edge. It was an Imax-like experience called Max Vision (similar but different to the Imax Cinemas).
Leaving the cinema many of us pumped for the amaz-ing, spectacular, awe inspiring walk that laid ahead of us. Then came the most un-expected on an excursion, the work. As we progressed through the day the work turned out to be deeply informative and I dare say… useful.

English Faculty ReportAs the year draws to its inevitable conclusion, I would like to recognize some excellent achievements over the past term or so. The results for the English, Writing and Year 7 Spelling Competitions arrived late last term. Even though we number of participants was down on previous years, there were some outstanding results by our boys. All the grades had averages above the state average in each competition. As well, I would like to thank the parents for supporting these competitions again this year.
The English Competition, which was yet again well patronised, had 20% of the participants were successful in achieving a credit or a distinction. We even had another rare High Distinction this year. The recipient of the High Distinction certificate was Vindesh Nadan in Year 10 – well done on such an outstanding achievement. The recipients of the Distinction certificates were James Cai and Panayioti Constanti from Year 8; Henry Liang, Scott Worthington and Kevin Yin from Year 10. As well, Toee Naing from Year 7 was recognised for his writing skills with a distinction in the writing competition.
With Year 11 students beginning their HSC course, I must emphasise the importance of a regular and constant approach to all their courses, not just English. The HSC exam will come around very quickly and a steady study programme is crucial in the long run. As well, students MUST ‘use’ their teachers more often when they need further assistance or explanation of aspects of the course.
Can I again remind you of the importance of reading at home regularly! Your son should be reading for at least 30 minutes per night. With the holidays approaching fast, there is no better, or cheaper, activity your son can do than to read as many novels as he can. He should choose novels he enjoys, but the novels should also be a bit challenging for him.

DRUM CORPS ANZAC AWARDDuring the 2011 October school holidays, three Homebush Boys Drum Corps students, Drum Major Daniel Collis, Richard Li and Pavi Sivakumaran were invited to attend a ceremony at the Hyde Park Forum on Elizabeth Street to receive an award for the Corps’ outstanding effort in the ANZAC march in Syd-ney this year.
To receive this award, participating bands must compete against others in several categories, including marching and drumming. This year the Homebush Boys Drum Corps man-aged to surpass the drum corps which had been awarded this trophy for several years running. The trophy, titled ‘Australian Junior Marching Band’, was presented to Daniel Collis with a plaque which reads “2011: Homebush Boys High School”.
At the Forum, six awards in total were given to their respec-tive winners, all coming first in their respective categories. The trophy now sits in the trophy cabinet outside the hall, vis-ible to all who walk by and enter the school.

Jump Rope for Heart.Last term the whole of year seven participated in jump rope for heart. This consisted of us raising money for the heart foundation, whilst we got physical with vari-ous jump rope activities at the same time.
Some of these activities were relays, individual com-petitions, group skipping routines, trying out different tricks and a stamina contest. They were all great ways of whipping into shape whilst having great fun at the same time. I personally liked the different relays; as they were fast paced and a fun way of practising various skipping techniques.
By the end of the day it turned out that the whole of year seven raised the whopping amount of just over $1500 which all went to the aid of people suffering from heart disease and other heart conditions.

The Australian Mathematics CompetitionThe biggest competition in which the school is involved is the Australian Mathematics Competition, with over 500 entrants. It was disappointing that this year’s competition date fell in the middle of our year 12 exams and as a consequence these students were unable to participate. I would like to thank Mr Halkidis and Ms Gobel for organising this competition and all students and staff for their cooperation in ensuring that the day ran smoothly. The table below summarises our results.

Homebush Boys Badminton Team – GBAS School CarnivalThe completion of a new gymnasium, in 2010, opened up the opportunity for a new sport to flourish at Homebush Boys High School. The gymnasium was fully equipped with Badminton courts and the sport became part of the sporting curriculum.
On Sunday 25th September, the Homebush Boys’ badminton team participated at the annual Greater Badminton Asso-ciation of Sydney School Carnival Competition. Having finished second in 2010, we were determined to finish one better this year. However, we started off with a tight loss to Killara Boys, losing 2-3; but this only made our determination to win stronger. We fought hard and won all our remaining rounds, ultimately becoming the 2011 winners of the GBAS School Carnival. The team consisted of Donald Nguyen, Anthony Tang, Rio Kang, Kurstan Hu, William Nguyen and Kallen Doong.
It was a fun and memorable day which we all enjoyed. The boys paid tribute to their coach, Maths teacher, Haroon Ha – Kalan said “Mr Ha provided the tactics and guidance for our victory. Badminton is now a very strong sport at school.

LEADING LADSThe staff and students of Homebush Boys High elected their new group of student leaders to replace the graduating body of seniors.
The twenty-six prefects-elect will begin duties when school resumes in October. Days after being elected the boys were off to the Jamberoo Valley for a leadership camp, where team-building activi-ties, problem solving tasks and exhilarating plupse of activities were the order of the day.
Abseiling a fifty metre cliff at Mt Kiera, canoeing the Minimurra River or being amongst the tree tops in Jamberoo each provided an opportunity for the boys to push physical boundaries and bond as a unit of leaders.
Incoming School Captain, Phillip Siomos, said “the twenty-six boys came together so well! We will be a cohesive team of leaders.” This was endorsed by Vice-Captain Ali El Kheir who commented “The Optimum Experience created an event we will never forget. We learned about leadership and life.”

Homebush Boys Awarded $2,500 Environment Grant
State member Mr Charles Casuscelli, presented Head of Homebush Boys High School En-vironment Committee Mr John Pearson, a cheque for $2,500. Homebush Boys High School was successful in its application for a grant from the Eco Schools Program. The funds will help HBHS to set up a program to educate the school community on energy wastage. The program will work in the ‘Solar Schools’ program, in which HBHS was also successful in securing a $50,000 grant from the Commonwealth Government to establish solar panels on buildings within the school.
The Eco Schools grant will help the school establish a school energy audit , educate the commu-nity about minimising energy consumption and putting into place strategies and programs to effec-tively reduce energy usage, including integrating energy sustainability concepts into all KLA programs

Even though the year is winding down students in Visual Arts and Music are still achieving high standards. Congratulations go to Elton Cheng, Misha Mu and Douglas Cheung of Year 8 Visual Arts who had their art-works from Operation Art selected for an exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. Only 50 artworks are chosen from over 700 and for our school to have three is evidence that we have some talented students in our school that are getting excellent guidance and direction from their art teachers. There was also success for Dominic Yates and Christian Nguyen of Yr 7 who also had their artworks selected for the Nagoya exchange exhibition in Japan. They both received certificates on assembly for their outstanding efforts. We also recently heard that Yr 12 student Allen Shen has had his visual arts Body of Work short-listed for possible inclusion into Artexpress, which continues a strong tradition of student achievement at this level. In Music Ms Tracey Burjan has come on board to restart the school band and also start a choir group. There has been a fantastic response from the students who are all keen to show their musical talents. Tracey is an accomplished music tutor with a strong record of achievement and we look forward to many fine performances from the students under her guid-ance.

Multicultural Action Research ProjectHomebush Boys is proud to be one of fourteen partner schools who are participating in this large research project, co-ordinated by researchers at the University of Western Sydney. The project is designed to investigate multiculturalism in schools and will be used to guide policy directions in future years. On October 27th, the first stage of the project began with focus groups of students, teachers and parents meeting with researchers. We would like to thank all of our volun-teers who provided valuable insights into community perceptions of multiculturalism and education.

Yr 11 Computing Studies Excursion
On Friday the 23rd September year 11 IPT students visited the Academy of Information Technology in Ultimo. On the last day of year 11 the current year 12 IPT students had the privilege to witness a day that subdued the stress of the prelims that was overwhelming them. We started the day hop-ing for a fun packed blast; at 8.45 and in about an hour we arrived at the venue when the fun began. We started with an animation project of 3D graph-ics with perspective. A uniquely designed exercise for us; where we had to simulate the actions and the experiences of a bowling alley. We used the ground-breaking software Autodesk. We were guided through a series of basic steps as were amateurs in that particular software. On complet-ing the exercise were had an opportunity to view few of the amazing previous works of our guide; making the experience extremely educative and entertaining. This was followed by unarguably the best part of our day. We commenced with an in-tense session of fierce battling in the well-known first person shooter ‘Unreal Tournament 3’.
The Motion Tracking Room (pink room) was the 2nd activity that we experienced in our excur-sion after creating a ten pin bowling game. My experience in the motion room was great and fun because it senses any action that I do, for example you can move any part of your body around and dance inside the room and it shows what you’re doing on a big screen. Many of our students volunteered to go inside the pink room and we were expected to create a huge yellow bomb by simply waving our hands left and right until we saw a strike of yellow light, we then had to spin our hands around without touching them and we would then see a huge yellow ball, the final stage of this motion was to release the yel-low ball by spreading our arms out in a fast pace and we would then see the ball flying towards us like as though we had created a real bomb.
The other experience that I had in the mo-tion room was that I got to fly a plane. The main idea of the flight stimulator was to successful-ly go through 10 hoops. While I was flying the plane we could see grass and water in the back-ground, there were also a lot of mountains that I flew past and on top of that about every 10-15 seconds there were red hoops that I had to go through. Overall the motion tracking room was a great experience in our IPT excursion and all our students had enjoyed the IPT excursion over-all because of all the great experiences that we faced and would be useful to us in the future.

The summer season has reached the half way point of the season and our grade teams are perform-ing well. Our 1st grade volleyball and basketball teams remain undefeated and we have several teams that are currently placed in the top four positions in the table. There have been some excellent indi-vidual and team performances recently.
Bassel Rana represented NSW at the Junior Weightlifting Championships. Basel placed 1st in the 62kg weight division in the U15’s age group, 2nd overall in Australia, 2nd in the Trans-Tasman and broke several Australian records for his age. He has been selected to represent Australia to tour New Zea-land. We wish Bassel good luck on this tour.
Congratulations to Michael Napoli of year 9 who competed at the National Acrobatic Championships. Michael, who was representing NSW finished 5th overall in his age group a fantastic achievement. The schools U/15 water polo team has progressed through to the regional finals after victories at Ryde pool last week and will now have to travel to Gosford in the coming weeks to progress through to the final 16 of the state.
Well done to Mr Ha and his Badminton team who won the Greater Badminton Association tourna-ment recently, defeating schools from Killara, James Ruse and Normanhurst. The boys were presented with their medals on the day and also in a special presentation on the school assembly.
Finally a special mention to the U/15’s knockout basketball team who were narrowly defeated by Westfields Sport High School in their last 16 of the state fixture at our School Gym on Tuesday. The boys put in a valiant effort against their more fancied opponents. The scores were deadlocked after half time and again at fulltime with the game being forced into overtime. Unfortunately the boys were narrowly defeated 50-42. Well done to all the boys and their coach Mr. Achmad.
