OBJECTIVE

To produce a set of NOTES for your assigned section to

share with the class. (Please choose 1 student to represent

your group and share notes on ELMO.)• Determine a logical and clear organization for the notes• Include ONLY pertinent information • Think like a teacher. What would I focus on? What have I

already talked about in bellwork?• Identify the MODE(s) of DISCOURSE in your sections of the

text. • Determine why these were used (purpose)• Decide if and how it is effective to use those particular modes

INDIVIDUAL WORK

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read” (Day 2)

1. Using your SOAPST(one) reference guide, compose a

thorough analysis of the (A)udience and (T)one.

2. The entries for each should be no less than a paragraph.

3. Use citations to support your assertions.

4. Next, write up a brief critique of Prose’s article. What is

your immediate reaction and why?

GROUP WORK

As a group, you will write 2 pieces: a

summary of Prose’s essay and brief

comparison and contrast piece.• Summary of “I Know Why…” should be a

2-3 sentences and VERY CONCISE.• Comparison and Contrast between “How

to Read Like…” and “I Know Why…” should have 2 parts: THE NOTES and PLANNING and a 1-PAGE ESSAY. As a group, determine the best organizational structure. (2 paragraphs, 3 paragraphs, etc…)• The question at hand is can you

recognize insights and draw relationships between the two?

FINAL STEP: MODELING

I will be looking at “I Know Why the Caged Bird

Cannot Read” with you as a class.

I want to walk through my own annotative process

in hopes that you find new strategy and options.

driven annotations I make as both reader and

writer.
