This course challenges students to investigate into the adaptation and conversion of existing buildings as a distinctive type of architectural and interior design. The Studio aims at fostering researchers advanced skills of designing interiors through a comprehensive design research and integral design process. Researchers will be trained in understanding essential aspects of complex interiors environments, and made familiar with the diverse issues, agents and strategies that enable a pivotal role in their making, while dealing with complex building projects, given the characteristics of the economy, the emergence of new building programs and the need to adapt existing structures.

RITM: Restoration, Intervention, Transformation, Modification(RITM: İç Mimarlıkta Restorasyon Müdahale Dönüşüm Modifikasyon Alanı)
Subject: Taught in conjunction with RITM (Restoration, Intervention, Transformation, Modification) for Interior Architecture Design Studio, INAR 560 - Intervention and Modification - challenges students to investigate into the adaptation and conversion of existing buildings as a distinctive type of architectural and interior design practice.
Aim: Course’s primary intention is to promote a dynamic ‘architectural conversation’ in order to remark the crucial role of ‘design’ in relation with ‘history’, where ‘design’, if supported by a conscious and accurate approach, can generate ‘creative’ new solutions to ‘re-use’ and bring ‘new life’ within aged architectonic envelopes through the ‘positive’ conservation of the historical built environment, that is when the meaningful re-functionalization of a valuable building becomes the essential complement of any physical rehabilitation and a great chance to employ design tools to re-think the past with a contemporary significance.
Content: The consideration of the potentials of underused, neglected, abandoned or vacant historical structures for future 'new' usages and the evaluation of recent experiences, the recognition of contemporary trends in Building Transformation and the remark of the interrelation between new building programmes and up-to-date design approaches represents the core content of the course

INAR 501 INTEGRAL INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO I
The course focuses on the research stage of the design process with regards to the transformation /
regeneration / redesign of a proposed designers’ district/ street / group of buildings / structure by the collaboration
with Akdeniz Academy within the variables of the urban context of Izmir. It is concerned with the study of large,
complex interiors: the designing / production / exhibition / sale spaces that represent our time and are central to the
experience of the contemporary designers’ district. The studio focuses on those interiors spaces whose scale, complexity, position and uses within the extended urban environment
render them part of the public realm as “Izmir: The Design City”.
