A word on taxes!
Its tax season! To most people, those words are boring,
frustrating, terrible, and/or POINTLESS! What does it even mean to
file taxes? Well, every time you get a paycheck from working at a job,
money is taken out of it. This money goes to pay for all sorts of thingslike libraries, parks, schools, the military Social Security and
Medicare/Medicaid. The money that is automatically deducted from
your paycheck is based on how much money the government
estimates youll make in a year.
Depending on how much money you make in a year, the
government can end up taking more in taxes from you than you
actually owe. This is especially true if you have children, because of
the Earned Income Tax Credit. The EITC is for families, and itsbasically a way to put more money into the pockets of people who
need it.
When you file taxes, youre basically making sure that you and
the government dont owe each other anything. Often times, the
government actually owes YOU money, and that gets refunded to you
in a tax return. Filing taxes can be really confusing, even for people
who have been doing it for a number of years, which is why its so
awesome that there are many free tax preparers who will help you file
for free! Thats right! FREE! Just bring your W-2, social security
card, and state ID.
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to call, email or
drop by and ask your case manager!
