October 30, 2016 Thirty-first Sunday of Ordinary Time
Pastor’s Note: In Reference to Last Week: Intercommunion
After this last week’s catechesis, something became unclear, as Fr. Jude misspoke
about intercommunion. Intercommunion is the practice among Protestant Christians of
receiving communion in each other’s churches. From our point of view, this is possible
because they all have agreement on what communion is: a memorial meal of bread and
the “fruit of the vine”or grape juice. Generally speaking, most “Bible Christians”
believe that when they imitate what Jesus did on Holy Thursday night, that Jesus becomes present in a
special way, although it relies on the verse of scripture that speaks of “where two or three are gathered in
my name, there I am in their midst.”Nothing actually happens to the bread except the meaning of the
eating, for them.
For us, and for the Orthodox, the bread is changed into the Body and Blood of the Lord. For us, it is by the
process called “Transubstantiation”, wherein the essence of the bread and wine is changed into the Body
and Blood of the Lord, and that we actually receive Jesus--and not bread and wine. Also, for us, when we
receive communion, we can do this because we have accepted that the Teachings of the Church, and the
Authority of the Church as exists in the deposit of the faith. In more colloquial terms, the Scripture and
Tradition and the Teaching of the Church are all true and it is incumbent upon us all to be one in those
beliefs. This is why the US Bishops have written the following:
“Guidelines For The Reception Of Communion… FOR OUR FELLOW CHRISTIANS
We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray
that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one
another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally
disappear, in keeping with Christ's prayer for us "that they may all be one" (Jn 17:21).
Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of
faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily
not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians
requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law
(canon 844 §4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish
National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman
Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians
of these Churches (canon 844 §3).” [© 1996, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops]
Furthermore, Catholics are forbidden to receive communion in any Protestant Church because of the
profound and obstinate divisions that exist between us on their part. This is a grave offense against our
belief in the Eucharist, and we incur serious sin when we do this. We must receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation before we may receive in our own church again.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Don Malin

“Dia de los Muertos”“Day of
the Dead”
Have you, like me, ever
wondered what “Dia de los
Muertos”is all about? Instead of
scary goblins and bloody shrieks, the people of
Mexico welcome the spirits of their families with
the delicious aroma of food in the air and decorate
gravestones, what’s this all about?
Join us on All Souls Day, Wednesday, November
2nd 6:00 pm. in our parish hall for a presentation
of this ancient tradition and celebration.

Prayer for the Pope
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the
heavenly Father, and have told us that
whoever sees you sees Him. Show us
your face and we will be saved.Your
loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and
Matthew from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from
seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal, and
assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of
us, the words that you spoke to the
Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible
Father, of the God who manifests his
power above all by forgiveness and
mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the
world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also
be clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion
for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel
sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every
one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a
year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed
enthusiasm, may bring good news to the
poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the
oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of
Mary, Mother of Mercy,
you who live and reign with the Father
and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.
