EINFUHRUNG IN IBSENS "PEER GYNT~I

FOREWORD TO HENRIK IBSEN'S "PEER GYNT:'
Henrik Ib s en s, des groBen nordischen
Geistersehers dramatische Gedichte "Brand"

sonliche Peer Gynts ins Allgemein-Menschliche
gesteigert.

Inhis dramatic poems,"Brand"and"PeerGynt",the great Northern visionary, Henrik Ibsen, at-tains to the height of Norwegian romanticism
of the 19 thcentury; which, likeall romanticism, draws its subjects from the deepest sources, from the wounds, the sorrows nursed in secretby the nation, stamping its character and giving
birth to its traditions and legends. The characterof Peer Gynt has been conceived as the incar-
nation of Norwegian character and spirit, seenas in a mirror reflecting its own people and
other nations; only in parts strong tarnishedor dulledwith the breath of satire. And, perhaps,
rightly 50. Yet, not unlike the individuality ofa Faust, a Don Quixote, a Till Eulenspiegel, a
Don Juan or a Hamlet, that of Peer Gynt hasassumed traits characteristic of humanity atlarge. As to the problem attending individuality, dominating its actions, determining its destiny
and involving it in constant conflict with itselfand the outer world, the question arises: whatis to be the outcome of excessive fancy allowed
to roam at large, of unbridled presumption andself-conceit, if the one cannot unburden itself
in creative art, the other, justified in its proudconsciousness of freedom, power and strength, fall a victim to contradiction and exaggeration.
This is shown clearly in the setting of the
drama, the argument, being divided into three
parts. The fatal heirdom of a fanatic -infirmmother, of a drunkard -spendthrift father drivesthe youth, PeerGynt, the scion ofsuch wretched
parents, on to deception and falsehood, in whichhe eventually believes himself even; he developsa quarrelsome spirit, takes to drinking, and is
finally misled to carry offa girl he is betrothed to,-Rape of the Betrothed-(Grieg'sPeerGynt-

oblivion spurs him on to the lowest degree ofsensuality. Once more, imagination becomesreality, and, in his "King-Dream" ,leads him intothe arms of three love-mad dairy- maids and in-tothe hall oftheKing oftheMountains (SuiteLa),
into the presence of the "Old Man of Dovre"surrounded byhisdemons andghostly phantoms,
and of the troll princess whom he is to marry. But as this union would metamorphise him into
a troll and wild beast, he awakens to the con-sciousness of his better self; his conscience isroused, which, however, still shrinking from
facing the naked truth, and lacking the moralcourage to torrn a definite decision, prefers tocontinue wandering in the crooked paths and
ways of the "Great Crook", (allegorical person).Pure nature and pure love(Solvejg)are, however,
at work pricking his conscience and striving tofree it from impure thought which its contact
with the hobgoblins has implanted, and left, init. Too late I Sin in Thought - embodied in

d'Edvard Grieg (1874-76*). Elle, peut-etre le

moments he alleviates by telling her all sortsof self-invented fairy-tales, and then, off he setsinto the wide wild world.
The man Peer Gynt lives the loose life of anadventurer. His fellow-men, the representativesof the nations he secretly derides and makes funof, are become to him milk-cows, merely objectsfrom which to derive profit and wealth; the Lord
of Heaven flattered by him in words, being hisown special Protector. One scheme follows theother in rapid succession. In his dreams offounding an empire of the desert, he delights inhis role as a prophet worshipped by beau-tiful Arabmaidens - Anitra's Dance - (Suite I,.)and - Arabian Dance (Suite II,s), - But thegood common sense of Anitra soon puts anend to this dream, and nothing survives of itbut a pale stet phantom (Solvejg), fast fading intonaught. The music of the Memnon statue, theriddles of the Sphinx in Egypt disclose nothingto him, who has in the meantime turned ama-teur antiquarian. And nothing short of thehorrible scenes he witnesses in the lunatic-Asylum at Cairo affords him a solution of life'sproblem: To find self-sufficiency in coarseegotism and realism, to live on without an
object, or feeling of responsibility in life, isequivalent to insanity.
Peer Gynt, now an aged man, a second Ahas-verus, or Flying Dutchman, is wrecked in aterrific storm just off the coast of Norway -PeerGynt's Returnhome (SuiteIl,a); he man-ages to save himself, and arrives home just intime to witness the sale by auction of his last in-heritance, and to hear, incognito, the crushingjudgment pronounced upon him by his fellow-citizens, by the people. He retires to the solitudeofthe wild moorlands, and there lives his wastedlife over again. The scene now becomes alle-gorical and symbolical throughout. The uncanny"button-founder", who wants to new-mould him,the "Ancient One of Dovre" now reduced to
beggary, the "Emaciated One" - are all of thembut the incarnate voices of his troubled con-science roused into action, and calling him toaccount, reminding him: "In all states and con-ditions of life, thou wert ever satisfied with thineown self alone, and yet, ignorant of the truemeaning of life, thou wert never thine own self'l"
The ruins from the wreck of his wretched lifecover but one better ego, one name worthy ofremembrance: Solvejg, the purely beloved one,who has grown old, grey and blind, waiting forthe coming of him she loves. Bedded in her lap,as in that of a mother who understands, andforgives, all, Peer Gynt is sung to eternal rest, soothed by the lilt of Solvejg's Lullaby. Thus the solution of the problem reads: Faith,Hope and Charity.
The fact ofthis mysterious poem, withits threadof deep thoughts rooted in Norwegian soil, hav-
ing met with such a hearty welcome and successon the theatre-stages of foreign countries farfrom its native home, is due, in no small degree,to Edvard Grieg's glorious music (1874-76*).Itmay even be said, that it was, probably, thisvery music, the most precious blossom of Nor-wegian musical romanticism, which opened out,and interpreted, to wider circles the poeticalromance and beauty iJi Ibsen's Peer Gynt.
