IN THIS PROJECT DEVELOP THE NASAL SOUND NUMBER THREE: THE VELAR NASAL CONSONANT

CHARACTERISTICS: A velar sound. The back of the tongue

closes against the soft palate. The closure is further forward if it follows on from a front vowel. The soft palate is lowered, and air passes out through the nasal cavity. /ŋ/ is voiced.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICSThe consonant /ŋ/ is phonetically

simple but phonologically complex.

Phonetically, it is simple because it is no more difficult to produce than /n/ or /m/.

Phonologically, it is difficult because it is not easy to describe the context in which in occurs.

/ŋ/ does not occur as an initial position.
