Traditional taxonomic

revisions and monographs,

like Flora Neotropica, are

static and hard to update

Biological monographs are

systematic and biological

treatments of all the species

of a given plant group and,

therefore, are often

substantial.

The same with printed Floras

Why Cyperaceae?

One of the 10 most diverse families of

angiosperms, with over 5400 species

Why Cyperaceae?

Total biomass worldwide is

enormous

A Chesapeake Bay (USA) salt marsh

can have over 27,660 Kg/ha of

Schoenoplectus americanus biomass!

The value of ecosystem

services in wetlands

dominated by Cyperaceae is

extremely high

Ecosystem services, including carbon

sequestration, mitigation of nitrogen runoff,

and erosion control in the Mississippi

Valley wetlands (USA) are valued at

US$ 1,500/ha annually

What do we know? What we know

– Floristic (Regional) Knowledge

– Taxonomic knowledge

What we do not know – Under-collected areas

– Groups not studied

Pooling the Data

• What to put online

• What do we have?

• What can you put

online that can’t be

published (e.g., multi-

entry keys, lots of

color photos)?

What we know about Brazilian Cyperaceae,

From a global perspective

What we know about Brazil is greatly improved by

adding data from adjacent countries

and from unfinished projects

Added to that is the knowledge of specialists in Brazil

and neighboring countries

In 2009, the first complete checklist of the

Cyperaceae of Brazil was published

Rodriguésia 60 (4). 2009

This work, with 9

authors, was the

foundation of the

Cyperaceae treated

in:

Made possible by the development of a multi-user, off-site data entry platform by

CRIA and JBRJ.

Based on all previous work done in and around Brazil, and on the available

databases at CRIA, JBRJ and NYBG.

The product of work during 2010 of 413 specialists who contributed a total of ca. 23

years of work.

Static vs. Dynamic web pages

Normal web pages must be modified and

updated individually

Many are ‘owned’ and maintained by

individuals who eventually will cease to

maintain them

Data stored as part of an institutional database,

however, can be displayed in web pages, but

is maintained institutionally

emonocot, KE EMu, and other databases

provide frameworks to display such data

online
