¿Qué hora es?(What time is it?)

•Qué (kay) means what.•Hora (or-ah) means hour.• Es (aye-s) means is.• ¿Qué hora es? Literally means what is the hour.

How to Answer “It is one o’clock”• To tell time in Spanish you use the singular

form of ser, which means “to be”, which is es only for one o’clock.

Ex.• Juan: “¿Qué hora es?” (What time is it?)• Pablo: “Es la una.” (It is one o’clock or the one

hour.)

Format for 2:00-12:00

Son las (#).This means→ “It is ____ o’clock.”

Example: Son las cuatro.--> “It is 4:00.”

How to say quarter past____o’clock.

Son las (#) y quince = “It is ____:15 o’clock.”

ORSon las (#) y cuarto = “It is ___:15 o’clock.”

Example: Son las dos y quince/cuarto. (It is 2:15.)

How to say half past_____ o’clock

Son las (#) y treinta = “It is ____:30 o’clock.”

ORSon las (#) y media= “It is ____:30 o’clock.”

Example: Son las dos y treinta/media. (It is 2:30.)

Basics:

When telling time, always begin with son las.

- Son las ocho

Use ‘es la’ when the hour is 1:00

-Es la una

To add minutes, use ‘y’ for ‘and’ then add a # for the minutes

-Son las cinco y diez

If it’s is the first half of the hour, do not use menos.

In the previous two slides, we told you that you can say certain times in different ways, such as 8:15.

Just to review-in any hour of the day if the clock reads #:15, in spanish instead of saying quince you can say “Cuarto”.

TELLING TIME WITH MENOS

USING MENOS “Menos” means minus. Menos is used to tell time when the minute

hand is past the half hour. To tell time with menos use:

Son las + (hour+1) + menos + (60-minutes)Except for when using uno use:Es la + una + menos + (60-minutes)
