Introduction to Using Hot Potatoes
Select the Hot
potatoes option
from the Start:
Programs: menu as shown
There are six programs to choose from:
•JBC - Multiple choice•JQUIZ - Short answer quiz
•JMIX - Jumbled sentence
•JCross - Crosswords•Jmatch - Matched pairs•Jcloze - Gap fill exercise
JBC (Multiple Choice)
Clicking on JBC brings up this screen.
Type the title of your quiz here.
Type your first
question here
Type your possible answers in the boxes on this side of the screen
And your
feedback on this
side
Remember to select
the correct answer by clicking in the small
box

Use the feedback option to provide additional informationThen the students learn, even if they get the answer wrong
Clicking here moves you
along to question 2. Type in the question, possible
answers and feedback as
before. Don’t forget to
check off the correct answer
Click on the ‘Save As’ icon
and name and save your file.
This saves it as a Master document.
You can then open this document
and edit your quiz
whenever you like.
Clicking on this icon
saves your quiz in a form that can be used by the student. It’s actually an
htm file.
Type in the file name for the .htm file, browse to the folder where you’d like to save it and
click on Save.
It’s a good idea to give it the same
name as the corresponding
Master file so you can tell which .htm
belongs to which .jbc
This is how the htm file
will look. The student can select one of the options
and it will tell them if
they’re right or wrong and
give them some
feedback. That’s it!

Here’s how it will appear when it’s been saved as an htm.
To change the appearance of your quiz, click on Options, Configure Output
You can: • Customise your
Titles/Instructions
• Alter your prompts and feedback
• Add hyperlinks or links to another quiz using ‘Buttons’
• Change the look of your quiz using Appearance options
(You can use these same options with any of the hot potato exercises)

Introduction to JMix
Clicking on JMix brings up this
screen
Type your title here
Type in a sentence. Put each word of the sentence on a new line
Click this icon to save as a master file. You can open this
file and edit your quiz whenever you like
Click this icon to create a Hot Pot version 6 WebPage - the form in which the student will see your quiz. (Choose version 5 if you are using version 5 of
the browser)
The WebPage is an .htm file.
Name the .htm – it’s a good idea
to give it the same name as the master file so that you can tell later which
WebPage belongs to
which master file
Select view the exercise in my browser to have a look at the
finished product
The student needs to click on the words in the correct order to make the sentence.
As each word is clicked, it moves to the box above. Click ‘Check’ when you’ve finished
A message box repeats the sentence in the order that you chose and tells you whether or not
you’re right
Click OK, Restart and then try again until it’s right
Clicking on this icon creates a drag and drop version of the WebPage
You may want to alter the name so that it’s distinguishable from the first WebPage you
created
Drag and drop the words into the order you think is correct. Then click Check as before.
