Invest in HOUSING in Emilia-Romagna LEADING FACTORS
• 70% of national exports of ceramics are from our region
• 11 internationally known trade fairs
• The cluster employs almost 365 thousand people
• Production of high quality furniture and furnishings
• Synergy with the advanced mechanics industry
• Advanced architectural and engineering services
• Research laboratories and centres that promote technological development within the Construction Technology Platform
• High quality niche markets such as artistically made ceramics
The housing system has a significant presence in the regional economy and encompasses the productive sectors which carry out the designing, redevelopment, construction and furnishing of buildings, and also includes the production of machinery necessary for such business activities and related services.
Investors in housing can count on a network of suppliers of quality products and services which are used to being part of a network, research and innovation centres placed within a sole thematic technological platform, internationally known trade fairs and specialized human resources.
The regional ceramic sector is considered a leader not only on a national level but internationally too.
Invest in quality, high technology and advanced services The regional building and tiling industries have achieved very high quality and productivity levels thanks also to the synergies they have created with manufacturing businesses which produce supporting machinery and advanced technology. Services available in the architectural and engineering fields are spread all over the region. Furnishing products from the region are well known for the quality of their design and materials. The creativity of artisans from the Emilia-Romagna region can be seen even in niche markets such as that of artistic ceramics. The formation of specialized human resources is carried out at universities, learning centres and technical institutes within the Technopole Network. The laboratories and centres within the Thematic Construction Platform, are all part of the Regional High Technology Network which promotes technological innovation in the companies in the cluster by spreading the use of new building materials that create energy efficiency in homes. The housing cluster on an international level Ceramics from our region to the value of 2,900 million Euros are exported all over the world every year. However, the entire cluster is known at an international level: the 11 trade fairs that are held in the region cover the various sectors involved in housing and have a strong participation from foreign operators in the field and represent an important meeting point for those who want to invest in the region Invest in local specialization The business structure is made up of almost 125,000 local units. In some areas, the specialized productive vocations are organized in districts with a high concentration of companies: one such case is the “ceramics district” in the area around Sassuolo (Modena). A high concentration of people employed in the housing cluster in general are to be found in Modena, Bologna and Reggio Emilia.

The companies that form the housing cluster are spread throughout the region and have been organized according to a logical system of cluster production: this means that the businesses involved tend to cover all the phases of production from start to finish. Within the housing system we can single out three sectors: wood, ceramics and building, to which we must add the construction macro-sector which covers the preparation of building sites, the construction of buildings, the installation of services and the completion of works. This last sector is made up of 50% of those employed in the entire cluster.

Exports
Databank: Istat - Coeweb
In 2012, the regional housing sector exported around 4,336 million Euros of goods (21% of the national export of housing goods and 8.7% of the regional total that year). Exports from the “ceramic sector” in our region amounted to 70% of the national total of the sector.
The top ten importing countries in 2012 and variations in percentage terms compared with 2000
Exports from the housing cluster showed good signs of
an upturn in growth in 2012 compared with 2009,
however the figures are still below the pre-crisis figures
Where we export to Export trends
The main destination of our exports is Europe. In the
period 2000-2012, there was a redistribution of exports
from countries with mature economies (eg. Germany and
the USA) to the more recently developed countries (eg.
Russia).
The building and wood & furniture sectors were the one
less affected by the crisis, showing a positive trend in
the period 2004-2012, while ceramics is still in a
catching up phase.
