Data Sources

Online Data Access

• The Irish Spatial Data Exchange at www.isde.ie

• Connects federated INSPIRE-compliant catalogues e.g. MI, EPA, DECLG, LA’s

• Government Open Data portal takes a feed

• Content progressing

Find -> ISDE

• MI self-service data portal at http://data.marine.ie

• Open formats

• Allows sub-setting of large datasets

• Seabed data at www.infomar.ie

Access – Marine Data Portal

• Ireland’s Marine Atlas at http://atlas.marine.ie

• Based on data used in the MSFD initial assessment

• Metadata links to describe data used

View

• Services available from multiple platforms e.g. ArcGIS, ERDDAP, THREDDS, ASP.Net and GeoNetworks

• Support OGC standards i.e. WMS, WFS, CSW & REST Interfaces

Limited online access Limited online access

Aquaculture Foreshore Licensing

• One view of data across teams

• Prevents errors through out-of-date data or competing interests

• Streamlines licensing advice – much faster & more responsive

Ireland’s Marine Atlas

• Developed on behalf of the Dept. of Environment as part of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive initial assessment

• Includes data from a wide range of public bodies

• Provides a rich view of activity in Ireland’s marine area

• Underlying data services a valuable resource

• Ongoing development to maintain and extend the data and functionality

A Federated Approach

• Data is distributed with multiple data owners

• Data from multiple organisation is combined together using common standards

• Coordination by WG meetings, tech transfers, MOU, etc.

• Open interfaces allow multiple end uses –allows reuse and shared ownership

• Easy reuse of digital content e.g. for OE Portal, Marine Atlas, real-time dashboards etc.

Our Digital Ocean

– Relevant & Timely Information will be Critical for the Sustainable Development & Management of the Marine

– The sources, types and volumes of marine data are increasing

– There is an opportunity now to develop an integrated approach, an Integrated Digital Ocean to:

1. Improve access to distributed marine data

2. Reduce costs and increase innovation through shared technology and services

3. Enable better understanding and decision-making

Some Data Standards• Metadata for Discovery & Evaluation

– Discovery & fitness for purpose e.g. quality, version, format, …

– Standard profiles required for integration

• Data Standards & Approaches

– Vocabularies help avoids errors & integrate from multiple sources e.g. Granny Smyth vs Granny Smith

– Linked data & ontologies includes relationships and programmable inter-operability, but tools difficult to use for domain experts

– Data service approaches include OGC, INSPIRE, REST, …

– Standards need to be coordinated e.g. SeaDataNet, ICES, EIONET (GEMET), EurOBIS, GBIF, …

Integrating Data for Analyses & Reuse

• Common semantics

• Common data structures e.g. INSPIRE, DCF, …

• Middleware to subset large datasets and to access dynamic data

• Standards-based interfaces e.g. CSW, WMS, WFS

• Analyses by Integrated Visualisation -> 4D
