Goals of ISS

To learn and understand basic theory of signals and linear systems with continuous and discrete time. To introduce  to random signals. The emphasis of the course is on spectral analysis and linear filtering - two basic building blocks of modern communication systems.

10

Practically

• Filtering

• Spectral analysis

• Random signals and some estimations

11

Program

1. Digital filters - fundamentals and practical usage

2. Frequency analysis using DFT - fundamentals and practical usage

3. Image processing (2D signals) - fundamentals and practical usage

4. Random signals - fundamentals and practical usage

5. Applications of signal processing and introduction to theory

12

NEW 2015/16

Program II.

6. Frequency analysis of continuous time signals

7. Continuous time systems8. From continuous to discrete - sampling,

quantization9. Discrete signal sin more detail10.Digital filtering in more detail11.Random signals in more detail12.Applications and advanced topics of signal

processing

13

Computer and numerical labsComputers: Copy, paste and think !!!Numerical ones: pen, paper and think !!!

1. Matlab on PC  – Intro to Matlab– Sound processing (mainly filtering)

2. Matlab on PC– Image processing– Random signals

3. Numerical exercise– 01_shifts_periodic_power.pdf– 02_complex_numbers_f_series.pdf – complex numbers only.

4. Numerical exercise and Matlab on PC  – 02_complex_numbers_f_series.pdf – bases, F. serier– Projection to bases and Fourier series - Matlab

5. Numerical exercise and Matlab on PC– 03_cont_systems.pdf– Sampling, quantization and aliasing (Matlab) – maybe as a homework …

6. Numerical exercise– 04_discrete.pdf– 05_filters.pdf

14

Project

• Analysis and processing of an image

• Common assignment, individual input– Already now on the web– The images will be generated later– Dtto for bonus assignment

15

Bonus assignment

• Liquid reward for the best results/ideas

17

Assessment

• Active participation in computer/numerical labs, showing the results to the tutor: 2 points each, 12 points total.

• Half-semester exam, NOTHING allowed, no literature, no calculator, no computer, full text, 25 pts.

• project – automatic assessment of correctness – 12 pts.– Bonus assignment: no points, la bouteille du rouge

• Final exam – 51 pts, NOTHING allowed, no literature, no calculator, no computer, a long list of equations at your disposal, Full text. – Minimum 17 points for passing the exam, otherwise

clipped to zero.

Video

• Both Czech and English lectures are and will be streamed and recorded.

• Check also http://www.superlectures.com/fit-iss/

• … but this year, many things are changing.

Disclaimer

The videos should serve as a tool and for those that could not be present and during your personal work. Please do not consider them as the only source of information. Replying them (my coefficient is around 1.4) 2 days before exam will not help you – this is a pathological use…

Please keep attending the lectures.

20

Important

• Notebooks (paper ones!), pens ! • What passes your fingers will not be forgotten:

– Write ! – Draw ! – Tear ! – Construct ! – Program ! – Visualize ! – Try things out !

• Attend lectures !• Speak to me and to the tutors !
