Our energies and work are committed to enhancing the Mitzvah of Tikkun Olam – to repair the world by making our community a better place to live in.”
I know that you will want to become a supporter of this very exciting Leaders in Action program as we together discover, understand and engage with the cutting edge issues of our time.

BAR MITZVAH PROJECT Hi my name is Zach, and my Bar Mitzvah is on January 26, 2013. For my Bar Mitzvah project, I would like to take donations for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (SPCALA). SPCALA has shelters in Hawthorne and Long Beach, and is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals through education, law enforcement, intervention and advocacy.
As part of my project, I will be setting up boxes at the Temple for the donation of the following items: · Unopened boxes or bags of animal food, dog biscuits or cat treats · Animal toys for the shelter pets to play with · Slightly used blankets or towels for pet beds
I will locate my boxes in lobby of the social hall. Please leave any items that you donate in the boxes for me to bring to the Shelter at the end of every week. For more information about SPCALA, you can visit their website at www.spcala.com.
Thank you.
THIS MONTH’S BAR MITZVAH
It is my pleasure to share some very exciting news with you! Temple Menorah was selected to receive two brand new grants from the LA Jewish Federation for additional programming for Jewish high-schoolers and middle-schoolers for the entire South Bay Jewish community. Our reputation with grants is very positive as a number of our programs began with a grant and were absorbed into the Temple’s core curriculum at the conclusion of the grant. Programs such as Kochavim (our dramatic arts) and EZRA (special needs) are wonderful examples of how grant funds can be leveraged to generate a legacy.
We have been awarded a grant for South Bay wide Jewish high school programming and another for a continuation of our Club Noar summer camp program into the school year. Both grants run from January to December of 2013 and were funded at $50,000 each, providing us with a substantial base from which to operate these programs. This funding allows us to hire a staff person to coordinate, launch and run these new programs as well as to subsidize the some of the costs for families.
The high school program will bring Jewish students from throughout the area together for educational, social and leadership training opportunities. We will have classes that can earn high school and/or college credits as well as classes that are recreational. The Arachim and Ma’amad programs from a few years ago will return and we will establish a South Bay hub to participate in the Weinberg Israel Fellows program which is a Federation program operating in the city and valley. There will be a retreat at Camp JCA Shalom as well as a winter trip for juniors and seniors (both subsidized by our grant). This first year the trip will be in the U.S. and next year we plan to go to Israel!
The Club Noar program is open to all Jewish middle school students in the South Bay. Through this program we will offer many different opportunities for our B’nai Mitzvah age students as they are transitioning out of our Religious School and into the next stage of their Jewish education and experiences. There will be social, recreational and learning opportunities available. Students will learn how to work with others, plan programs and events, and to advocate for issues that they believe in. There will be a board with meetings and responsibilities as well as overnights and a retreat at Camp JCA Shalom (subsidized by our grant). We are in the process of forming Advisory Committees for each of these new grants. If you would like to be a member of either committee please let me know at Randi@Templemenorah.org, your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to the generosity of the Spiwak family and the BJE, our EZRA and Shlemut Network programs provide specialized resources for Jewish students with special needs. The first grant in the amount of $5,000 allows us to continue the Shlemut Network to provide monthly events for Jewish young adults 18-25. Rabbi Deborah Goldmann coordinates

The second grant, for $10,000, enables us to for expand our EZRA program. Our EZRA program is a full inclusion program for students with special needs in our Religious School. This grant enables us to work in two different directions: supporting our teachers and madrichim, and supporting our parents. We have created a resource notebook with articles and suggestions for our teachers and have held two in-service meetings/trainings.
To support parents we are also working in two directions. Joel Schwartz, our 7th grade Religious School teacher who was awarded his doctorate in the fall, has been trained in the PEERS® method of social skills training through UCLA. PEERS® is a specialized program recommended for specific students by their physicians which has until now only been available at UCLA. We are proud to say that we are now able to offer this program in the South Bay at Temple Menorah and will be starting our first session shortly. If you have questions about, or are interested in, PEERS® please contact Joel at Southbaypeers@gmail.com. The second direction for parents is Parenting Classes. We will first be offering a group for the parents of teenagers and later for preschool parents. More information will be coming soon about these classes.
I am very excited to be bringing new and innovative programs to our community. I hope you or your children will be joining us in our endeavors and that together we can continue to strengthen our Temple Menorah community as well as our South Bay Jewish community.

CAMP MENORAH - NOW ACA ACCREDITED!!!
The focus on the priority of our youth at Temple Menorah has never been stronger than it is today. Last summer the camp staff worked diligently to meet the requirements of the American Camp Association in hopes of earning the coveted ACA Accreditation for Camp. The ACA accreditation program is constantly updated to reflect the highest of camp standards. ACA collaborates with experts from many fields including the
American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Red Cross to be sure requirements
are sound. Having the accreditation says that a camp provides the highest level of care for the campers and pushes to motivate and
educate campers each and every day. With over 250 standards that needed to be
documented and applied, this accreditation process was no small feat. I am proud to share that last summer’s Camp Menorah staff was successful in earning this accreditation. We can now proudly say that we are among the most elite group of camps. We know that the experience and safety of the campers is the most important aspect of our jobs. The Temple Menorah community deserves recognition for the positive and enriching environment we have cultivated for our children. For us, the ACA accreditation is an independent health and safety audit of our camp operations. For parents, the ACA-accredited camp logo symbolizes excellence and our accountability and ongoing commitment to the children we serve. We are the ONLY ACA accredited camp within a 15 mile radius (with the nearest Jewish accredited program in Beverly Hills). Knowing this we have an obligation to continue to expand and strengthen our program to become even more effective in serving the entire Jewish community in the South Bay. We are very proud of our accomplishments as a camp, and hope you can see the benefits of our hard work to become ACA-accredited. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our accreditation. Here are a few cool things that being ACA-accredited means for our community: A connection in Washington — ACA monitors important public policy areas,
tracking current and proposed legislation and anticipating issues that may affect the camp community.
Nationwide publicity — ACA's public relations outreach includes local and national media campaigns; a parent-focused Web site, www.CampParents.org; and an annual family publication, CAMP.
Ongoing staff training — Staff learn best practices in all areas of camp operation in preparation for the ACA Accreditation Standards Visit.

will explore the poignant moral and ethical issues that confront us in the 21st Century. Each of our speakers is an accomplished, well-known and well respected authority in his own field. Dean Erwin Chemerinsky is the founding dean and distinguished professor of law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. He is an authority on the Constitution who frequently argues cases before the nations’ highest courts including the Supreme Court and is thought out to comment on national legal issues. Dean Chemerinsky will explore the issues of privacy and the new technologies and social media we engage in daily.
Arthur Gross-Schaefer is an ordained Rabbi who is a professor of business law and ethics at Loyola Marymount University. He has won numerous awards for his leadership and inspiring thoughtful instructions. Professor Gross-Schafer is often consulted by many businesses and hospitals as they deal with the issues of professional ethics. Professor Gross-Schafer will discuss the conflicts of ethical decision making and expediency in our professional and private lives.
Dr. Elliot Dorff is a Rector and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the American Jewish University and a visiting professor at the UCLA School of Law. Dr. Dorff is a nationally known medical ethicist who has often testified before Congress as the legislators consider issues of technology and moral choices and their lasting imprints on our lives. Dr. Dorff will explore with you the new technologies that can either be a safeguard, life-saving boon to our medical community or focal points for making moral and ethical choices for families and their health care professionals.
