SPIRITUAL FREEDOMThe rst fruit of the Holy Spirit in discernmentis a sense of indifference, that is, the desireto let go of anything that might distractfrom hearing and following Gods will.Elizabeth A. Liebert in The Way of Discernment: The Spiritual Practice of Decision Making

CONSOLATIONfeeling good
DESOLATIONfeeling bad
Interior movements (feelings,thoughts, action urges) that lead us
to decisions & actions that:* make us closer to God
* make us more other-oriented, lessself-centered
* choose the higher values
* brings us deeper peace + fulfillmentbecause we are making the world
a better place
even if it feels unpleasant
Interior movements that lead usto the opposite direction: away
from God & others, etc.even if it feels pleasant

How much Ignatian indi ff erence do I feel about my options? IfIm not sure, do I at least have the desire to pray for spiritualfreedom?
If a friend were in my place, what would I advise him/her? Howwould I feel about my response years from now? At mydeathbed? at the Last Judgment?
In what way do my interior movements (feelings, thoughts, &action urges) lead me closer to God & grow more other-oriented? In what way do they lead me away from God & moreself-oriented?
How do I think God would want me to respond (to say, do, orthink)? What would Jesus do?

Praying for Con rmationMake a TENTATIVE decision rst if possible. Then imagine & pray over the consequences on othersand yourself.
SPIRITUAL CONVERSATION witha spiritual director or any co-discerner to discuss mydiscernment, and
PRAYER: to live with my tentativedecision and to imagine in prayerhow I would feel if the decisionwere nal.

The more signi cant & serious your decision,the more time you should wait for con rmation. Look
for con rmation in several positive indicators ratherthan any single one. Does your decision continue to sit well? Do you deeply desire this outcome?
Does the consolation remain? Is the decision in accord with Scripture & Churchteaching?
Does your decision further & strengthen your personal
commitments (for example, to family, vocation?) Do others who know you well con rm your decision? Do you have the energy & necessary courage toproceed?

Discernment is always done in thepresence of the Lord, looking at thesigns, listening to the things thathappen, the feeling of the people,especially the poor. My choices,including those related to the day-to-day aspects of life, like the use of amodest car, are related to a spiritualdiscernment that responds to a need
that arises from looking at things, atpeople, and from reading the signs ofthe times. Discernment in the Lordguides me in my way.

* There will be occasions when we will not have the
luxury of time for spiritual conversations and prayingover our tentative decisions. This is why we are invitedto become Contemplatives-in-Action, Ignatianleaders who are able to discern on their feet.
