Jean-Pierre Nicol and the others off to Roscoff

La Solitaire du Figaro 2013 - leg 3 - Gijon - Roscoff

Thursday, 13th June 2013Press Release

Some people say that a rainy start is a happy start. Let’s hope that will be the case forJean-Pierre Nicol, who has just sailed his one-design Bernard Controls over the starting

line for the 3rd leg of the Solitaire du Figaro. They all got off to a good start in Gijon atnoon today (Thursday) local time (1000hrs UTC) and are heading to Roscoff, 436 milesto the north with one mark to pass on the way: the Isle of Yeu, which they need to leaveto port. This first part of the race – 230 miles towards this island off the coast ofVendée, is likely to be the trickiest part of the leg, as a huge ridge of high pressure willbe blocking the way for the 40 solo sailors and it remains uncertain how it will develop. In other words, danger ahead!

They are going to have to keep looking at the weather on board and not getit wrong. Even if they manage to get it right for Yeu, the leg will be far fromover, as after that they have to round the tip of Brittany. So there will betidal currents to deal with, and even if we are not looking at spring tides atthe moment, it is still better to hop onto the conveyor belt in the rightdirection.

A few seconds after the gun was fired, a 15-knot NW’ly wind was blowingover the magnificent course for the start off Gijon. It was Vincent Biarnes, who stubbornly set off on the port tack, who led the way. At a traffic jam atthe final mark, Jean-Pierre Nicol was forced to head out to sea slightlybehind the first group. Nothing serious: the few lengths he lost in this partare tiny in comparison to the 430 miles ahead of him. In the second leg,Armel Le Cléac’h got off to a much worse start, but ended up winning theleg. So, no need to worry. It is now that the serious stuff begins startingwith getting away from the coast off Gijon. They’re off to Brittany.
