Calgary 2/1 with ‘Right-siding’ Transfer Bids – Part 2

Jim BerglundThis Part covers opening bids above the 1NT level, and typical response sequences

Jim Berglund

The purpose of this system is three-fold: ©to improve the odds in right-siding the contract

(having the weaker hand exposed)©to add more granularity to bidding – wherever

possible, giving a precise, unique purpose to each and every bid

©to define strong suits and identify slam prospects quickly and at lower levels.

After a positive suit response, • 3NT is to play; • a simple raise asks for a feature; • a new suit (forcing) denies support; • 4NT is 1430 .

Responder bids accordingly with a minimum, but may take control with slam-going values.

Over 4 or 4♣ ♦ • Cue bid or bid 4NT with a fit, bid partner’s long suit - 4♥ or 4 without a ♠

fit.• All 4-level bids are natural and non-forcing over interference

Hands with 4-4-4-1 (any singleton) distribution are typically difficult to bid well. The Mini-Roman convention is used to

handle all 11-15 HCP hands of this type.

You will find that most pairs use the 2 ♦ opener as weak, showing 5-11 HCP and 6 diamonds. My experience shows that

this bid generates better results.

Showing hands with 5 Hearts and 4 Spades with less than 16 HCP is a problem for most bidders, and as a result, the contract is usually played in Hearts with a 5-3 fit, while the superior 4-4 spade fit is never discovered.

Most Players use 2 ♥ as a preemptive bid, easily finding a spade fit for the opponents. Flannery solves a real problem, and the 2♥ opener increases the likelihood that the hand will be played by the stronger side

contract by bidding the minor suit you don’t have.

4-Level Bids

Opener Responder4 /♣ - ♦ NAMYATS - Good transfer to Hearts or Spades - shows 8 1/2 tricks. Eg. Void ♥KJ109xxx ♦AQJ KJx, or AKxxxxxx ♣ ♠ ♥Axx x x ♦ ♣

A bid of the intervening suit shows slam interest (Aces & Kings), and allows the strong hand to play. If opener does not bid their suit, they are bidding a void.

4♥/ - Preempt - Eg. Q109xxxxx ♠ ♠ ♥Kx ♦Qx x or better (rule of 2 or 3 if NV ♣

or V in first or second seat)

The Rule of 2 or 3 refers to the number of tricks you think you might go down if doubled. If vulnerable, you should only bid if you think you’ll go down 2 or less tricks (for a penalty

of 500 points). If non-vul, you can afford to go down 3 tricks – again for 500 points.

Using this rule allows partner to assess whether or not he should advance the bid, holding a couple of aces.
