Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
“I love summer.” These three words are like a mantra to Marianne, my garden-loving wife. She says them most every day as squash, okra, zucchini, peppers, beans, herbs, potatoes, and tomatoes of every size and color pile up on our counter like something from a magazine ad.
While I can kill a plastic plant, Marianne can make one grow. But I like summer, too. In these warm, bountiful months, inspiration floats on every warm breeze. Cicadas, for instance. I revel in their raspy and rhythmic serenades at night. And lightning bugs. At their peak, lightning bugs can make a backyard shimmer like moonlight on the water. And nothing captures children’s imaginations like a warm evening full of those teasing yellow flares that are there one moment and gone the next. For all the vigor of life around us, summer also becomes a kind of doldrums in our churches. Attendance at Sunday school and worship suffers during these months. It happens every summer in virtually every church, and it comes as no surprise. So, it makes for an interesting juxtaposition: Life and liveliness surge in the world around us, while its human stewards slip into a kind of spiritual hibernation. Pulling away from the day to day routines at home and at work for recreation is just that, re-creation. As we burst at the seams to “get away from it all” on vacation, we would do well to pay attention to what the once-dormant life around us does as it bursts forth. In a spirited display of liveliness, creation does not “get away from it all,” it gets on with it all. Summer is a season of purposed creativity and blissful abundance, and to shelve something as essential as our attentiveness to God while we re-create, while we take Sabbath time, is to deny ourselves fullness of life and joy. Let heaven and nature sing to us and wrap itself around us. We can sing back to it if we have a mind for such things. We have a heart for it. We might be surprised what will take root and grow. And when we come back home we will have holy produce to share. Live boldly.
Love joyfully. Drive carefully.
Peace,
Allen

Health and Wellness News for August
August is National Immunization Awareness Month
Shingles, the adult version of our childhood chickenpox, can be a painful illness before, during, and long after the actual skin rash is present. Zostavax, became available for use by adults over the age of 60 years over a decade ago. Follow up research on the Zostavax vaccine showed that:
It is approximately 50% effective in adults’ age 60 years. The protection from the vaccine began to weaken after 3 years. Prevention of post infection pain syndrome was 67% Older age at the time of vaccination was associated with lower levels of protection for even
shorter duration of time. Individuals with immune system disorders, taking immunosuppressant medications, or
receiving cancer treatments are not able to use this vaccine because it is a live vaccine. Live Vaccine
Continued vaccine research efforts have led to the development of a new vaccine for shingles called Shingrex. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC)”s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) had voted in favor of this new vaccine, and The Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) have approved its use. The new Shingrex immunization consists of 2 doses administered 2-6 months apart, and has a number of advantages over the older vaccine.
The Shingrex vaccine is indicated for adults over the age of 50 years. Clinical trials showed the vaccine is greater than 90% effective in all groups. Vaccine protection against the shingles related pain syndrome is approximately 89% in
Individuals age 70 years. Shingrex is NOT a live vaccine like the zostavax vaccine therefore, individuals with a weakened
immune system can safely receive the new vaccine. Shingrex will most likely be recommended for individuals who have already had the zoster
vaccine in the past. **Soups On Ministry Our Soup Ministry was a great success this past winter thanks to our volunteer teams.
