As all of you are probably aware and concerned, the
Coronavirus Pandemic is not only still affecting our community,
but the situation is worsening. As of June 24th, Medina County
had eighty-nine known cases since the inception of the virus in
February. There are still thirteen active cases as of that date with
fifty-eight recovered cases, two deaths, and what’s more
concerning, there were two “probable active” cases and fourteen
cases pending investigation. Of all the county cases, the Hondo
area code has had twenty-seven cases.
All of our citizens should be very alarmed as we are
suffering from a “second wave” of the virus. If we all do not
follow the basic rules of limited gathering, maintenance of a six-
foot distance between individuals and wearing a mask when out
and around town, especially in our large businesses, this situation
will only become worse. We ask that our citizens be much more
responsible in protecting themselves and their fellow citizens.
The Coronavirus Pandemic has had a substantial impact
on the financial welfare of many of our citizens, especially those
whose jobs have been either terminated or furloughed. The city
has tried to help as much financially responding with assisting
some with utility bills and suspending late fees and cut-offs. For
those who are unable to catch up with their utility bills, it is
suggested that they contact the Community Council of South
Central Texas, Inc. at a toll free number of 844-887-9241 for
more information. This funding will allow for assistance with
services and items such as rent, food and utilities. For information

July 2020 Newsletter
We sincerely hope that all of you enjoy the upcoming
Independence Day, July 4th, as you celebrate with your family
this most significant day in our nation’s history. However, I must
remind you all once again that the firing off of fireworks in your
city’s limits is unlawful and can be punished by a fine. Again this
year our police department will be patrolling the community in an
attempt to stop this very dangerous practice and will issue
citations.
To hopefully satisfy your desire for a fireworks display,
the City of Hondo is sponsoring the 6th Annual “Red, White &
Boom!” fireworks display on Saturday, July 4th at City Park #1
(at the Fairgrounds) with the gates opening at 7:00PM. Be safe
and enjoy this firework display!
Unless the Coronavirus Pandemic significantly worsens,
and some events cannot be held, the City’s Parks and Recreation
Department is celebrating the Nationwide Parks and Recreation
Month with some very entertaining events for our citizens.
There will be a “Picnic in the Park” at Memorial Square
on July 10th from 11:00AM to 1:00PM (bring your own blanket
and chair), a “Sundaes at the Square”, also at Memorial Square
will be held on July 24th from 11:00AM to 1:00PM (while
supplies last), and there will be a “Free Swim” on July 18th, also
from 11:00AM to 1:00PM at the city pool.
Also, sign-up for the City of Hondo Youth Girls
Volleyball (Grades 4th to 6th) will start on July 20th ending on
August 24th and registration for the City of Hondo Flag Football
will commence on July 20th ending also on August 24th.
What a great job the personnel in this department are
doing for the citizens of Hondo!
~ Mayor James W. Danner, Sr.

July is upon us. We have all been so focused on the impacts of COVID 19 we have let summer sneak up and
surprise us with these very hot temperatures. Here are a few reminders about summer safety:
1) Please remember to provide adequate water and shade for your pets. Extreme heat and exposure can cause
them to have heat stroke just like a human. We need to take care of our furry family members too.
2) Remember to practice water safety measures in your pools or at the river. Please make sure your little one
has on flotation devices if they can’t swim. Drowning can happen in the blink of an eye even for the best of
swimmers. Go out with a buddy when you can and remember to look out for each other.
3) Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! It is important to remember when working or playing outside to drink lots of
water or electrolyte drinks. Your body sweats to keep you cool and you lose all that hydration.
4) Wear a hat and/or sunscreen when you are out. Skin cancer is a risk for everyone.
5) Take frequent breaks to cool down. The heat takes a toll.
6) Be sure to not leave your pet or children in a car without air condition running.
We care about our citizens – even the furry ones! For more information and tips – please visit the Red Cross Heat
Safety Page at https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/heat-wave-
safety.html.
Have a great summer!
