JUMC military giving soars!
2016 Military Ministry goals exceeded
As we look back on 2016’s accomplishments, one area that stands out is our continued
commitment to service members and their families. Our goal
was to collect 50 cell phones and $300,000 in coupons. We
collected 62 cell phones and an amazing $445,218.82 in
coupons, which were sent to 22 installations in 8 countries.
We started our “Cell Phones for Soldiers” campaign in
2010 and since then have collected 554 phones which have
provided free phone time between deployed soldiers and their
families. In 2013 we added another opportunity to help our
service members and their families stationed overseas through
the “Coupons for Soldiers” program. We have sent a total of
$1,033,720.60 worth of coupons to deployed soldiers and their families.
As 2017 unfolds, with new challenges and opportunities in missions, I pray we will continue to
keep our service members and their families in our prayers. Our goal for 2017 is to donate at
least 50 cell phones and to break the $450,000 mark in coupons.
God Bless you and keep you.

Highway to Healing
Help find people who need help.
You may be aware of an organization in Lee County called Highway to Healing.
Volunteers from this organization drive cancer patients from their homes to treatment
centers and doctor appointments anywhere from Moore Regional Hospital to Duke
University Hospital and beyond.
While additional volunteer drivers are always welcome, what is needed now is help
spreading the word about this service. While Highway to Healing has been active in Lee
County for more than 30 years, some people still are not aware of this free service. We
are asking members of local churches and civic organizations to help “spread the word.”
If you know of any Lee County resident presently undergoing cancer treatment of any
kind and who could benefit from free rides to and from appointments, please tell them
about this organization, and ask them to call Highway to Healing at 919-774-8940.
Assure them the transportation is free and can be scheduled at whatever time is
convenient for the person needing help. There is no limit to the number of trips any
patient may make—we have driven some patients as many as 45 times. The only
limitation is that the person needing transportation be a resident of Lee County.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer driver, see Brad Butler, or call the Highway
to Healing number for more information. And don’t forget to spread the word about this
service.
Spread the
word!

Poetry and Finances do mix! By me, myself and God, of course

Once upon a time…..(actually it was early in 2013),
in a land far, far away….(Jonesboro, NC),
there was United Methodist Church…. (JUMC)
quiet and peaceful and little and yet,
for far too long it was swimming in debt….
($560,643 total debt actually)
($511,943 mortgage debt on Wesley Center alone).
“Egads, gadzooks it was exclaimed in a huff!
With this debt, we’ve been saddled… far long enough”.
Singing praises they gathered, they prayed and they served,
kept their heart with the Lord and their eyes never swerved;
they worshipped and witnessed and told all their story,
they gave honor to God, to His Majesty & Glory!
They prophesied the future and celebrated the past;
They began “Building THE Church”, to rid the anchor at last.
They pledged and they tithed, they worked and they labored;
Victory in Jesus was soon to be savored!
God’s faith was not lost, as they cut all their costs;
so they struggled, they scraped to even to score,
with a bank got a bargain and saved even more!
The dust has cleared, 2016 is history.
the debt is diminished, that’s not a big mystery.
…. (actually $175,841 total debt left)
The totals are totaled, the numbers are crunched;
the mortgage’s reduced, really quite a bunch!
…. (only $122,960 to go)!
It’s time to celebrate, the end is in sight,
The goal is ever closer, keep your eye on the LIGHT!

Moving? Phone or e-mail Change?
If you are moving or have changed either your e-mail address or your phone number and want to make sure other
members of JUMC still know how to contact you, please send your changes to two different places.
1. Let Kim know in the church office so she can change your information in the church records.
2. Let Brad Butler know so your changes can be published in our newsletter.
By doing these two simple things, other church members will be able to stay in touch with you. If you feel
your information is missing for any reason, please make these two contacts to make sure you stay connected to our
church family.

From the heart of Pastor Andi
Generosity in All Seasons
I want to sincerely thank you for your generosity at Jonesboro. As a congregation
you certainly gave generously of your monies to support the ministry, mission, and
outreach of the church. You were also extravagant with your energies in supporting special
projects like the Yard Sale, Fall Bazaar, Chicken Tender Dinner, Sips & Songs, hosting
Family Promise, and volunteering with the tutoring for children in the Jonesboro
Children's Community Choir, as well as hosting the kids and their families for supper.
I saw your love and generosity displayed at Christmas with the Angel Tree and Salvation
Army trees and the hundreds of luminaries that lined the sidewalks on Christmas Eve.
Lastly, I thank the Lord for your generous, "can do" spirit! I am privileged beyond words
to serve as your pastoral leader and watch in awe as God uses you, my church family, to
make a difference in our community and world as we continue to live into our core values
and mission "know Christ, make Christ known." (See article on Core Values on page 4.)
Abundant Life
"I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of." John 10:10. (The
Message, Eugene Peterson).
Jesus desires more for us than we can imagine! Abundant life is a possibility when we commit to a personal relationship
with Christ and abide and remain in that relationship on a daily basis. Jesus said, "When you're joined with me and I with
you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can't produce a thing. But if you
make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that
whatever you ask will be listened and acted upon." John 15:5,7-8. (The Message, Eugene
Peterson).
An abundant and full life is not a slim possibility that might occur in the future. We
experience abundant life when we daily surrender our life and will to God's will and way!
Paul describes this beautifully in Galatians 5:22-23: "But what happens when we live
God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an
orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, and serenity. We develop
a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that
a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal
commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely." (The Message, Eugene
Peterson).
My hope and prayer is that you will experience a full and abundant life today and always!
With Christian love, hope and joy,
Andi

Meet Oscar Hernandez, El Refugio Executive
Director
JUMC’s outreach ministry, El Refugio, welcomed its new Executive
Director in mid-December. Actually, while Oscar Hernandez is new to the
position, he is no stranger to El Refugio. Oscar taught the Spanish as a Second
Language class from fall 2014 through spring 2016, then became the citizenship
class instructor. He has participated in El Refugio training retreats, translated for
workshops, helped establish the collaboration with CCCC, recruited participants
and volunteers, organized computer classes and more.
Oscar has worked in his first month to learn, organize, spread the word about El
Refugio and set up the Winter 2017 class session, which began on January 12. As
Executive Director, Oscar ensures El Refugio’s goals are effectively addressed
through programs, networking, fund raising, administration and communication.
His position is part-time, and most of his El Refugio efforts will take place
evenings and weekends.
Oscar holds both Associates in Business Administration and Associates in Arts degrees from Central Carolina Community
College, where he was recognized as an outstanding student and leader. He has served on the board of Brick Capital
Community Develop Corp. and volunteers with many community services, including the Salvation Army Christmas Joy
Project. Oscar also works as assessment and retention specialist in the College and Career Readiness division of CCCC.
“I joined El Refugio because I want to be part of an organization that serves its community,” Oscar says. “I believe the work
we do gives us the opportunity to bring our community together through language learning and cultural
exchange. This wouldn't be possible without the support of Jonesboro Unite Methodist Church and a team of board members,
sponsors, instructors, child care providers and volunteers who believe in our mission.”
Oscar grew up in El Salvador and moved with his family to Sanford in 1999 at age 19, speaking very little English. Work in
brick factories and grocery stores helped pay family debts and fueled Oscar’s desire to attend college. He advanced his English
skills and earned the U.S. GED via CCCC’s ESL program. Working two jobs, by 2011 Oscar finally was able to obtain a bank
loan for college and earned two Associate’s degrees. Oscar notes that it’s not easy to learn English as an adult—much less
then use that English in advanced studies. He was (and is!) motivated. “I wanted my dad's sacrifices of bringing his family to
the U.S. legally to be worth his efforts,” he shares, “I wanted my mother--who passed in 2005--to be proud, and I wanted to be
more prepared to serve my community.
“My favorite quote,” Oscar continues, “is from Albert Einstein: ‘Try not to become a man of success, try to become a man of
value’.”
Watch for your opportunity to get to know Oscar at JUMC and via El Refugio events!

Greetings from Erika in Wisconsin!
Rev. Erika Martínez moved from Sanford in mid-December to
join her husband, Rev. Jorge Ochoa, in Wisconsin. In January she started a
full-time appointment to two United Methodist Churches: Elkhorn UMC
and Bethel UMC in Richmond, WI.
Erika writes:
“Saturday, January 14, was my first day. Both churches are 100% non-
Latino, so I felt very nervous in my presentation. The churches are very
kind and they know my ‘little problem’ [of somewhat limited English].
Their most welcome words were to support me and empathize with me.
Please continue to pray for the ‘gift of tongues’ for me.
“We are so happy! After one year and a half we have our
house!!! [Jorge will commute to his appointment in Sheboygan, WI, for
three days each week—but at least Erika, Jorge, Winky the dog and Rosita the cat will be together much of the time!]
“Please tell everybody I love them and miss you all.”
“Cold hugs from Wisconsin!”
Erika’s new address is:
W 5110 County Rd. A
Elkhorn, WI 53121
In early December, Rev. Erika Martínez
received the Sharon Mújica Community
Service Award from the Institute for the Study
of the Americas, UNC-Chapel Hill. El Refugio
supporters attending the ceremony were (from

A Chocolates Delight
A unique opportunity for you is taking place on Thursday, February 9, at 11:00 a.m. in the Wesley Center. You are
invited to a Chocolates Luncheon. It is the first event of its kind for JUMC. If you are a working person, come for lunch. If
you have more leisure in your life, join us at 11am and stay a while. This is the Southern Way.
Here is the program: there will be a salad bar and the lettuce will be provided. Each of you are asked to bring a veggie topp ing
to go on the lettuce. Salad dressing will also be provided. As you enter the Wesley Center, someone will add your veggie to
the Salad Bar.
Chocolate is, well---different! Just thinking about Chocolate can cause a pleasurable response. You may want to grab a bar of
Chocolate or make a nice cup of Cocoa. Suit your pleasure! Now, here comes the fun part. Each person is to bring some
form of Chocolate munchies or Chocolate dessert or Chocolate candies or surprise us! We will have a table set up where you
may place your Chocolate contributions. After enjoying the salad bar (our health food
for the day), we will move toward the delights in store for us. Easy now-- don't rush!!
Put the date on your calendar and we'll see you there!

Welcome to Stewart & Woodhouse
It shouldn’t be long now until JUMC’s Heritage Hall is in peak form again. There’s been a decidedly empty
space where the pictures of Thomas Simpson, Pat Sykes, Joe Wilburn and Hunter Preston used to hang together. They’ve
been away at the framer’s, waiting patiently for another two photos to be inserted to finish filling their frame, and they’re
back at last! Next time you stop by to review a little history and remember the many pastors & associates who have
served the church during the 140 years of its life, you’ll find Amie Stewart and Andi Woodhouse have joined the
four other leaders to fill the frame. Everything is up-to-date, complete with Mary Watson’s identifying inscriptions.

"Good Life"
I've watched my dreams all fade away and blister in the sun.
Everything I've ever had is unraveled and undone.
I've set upon a worthless stack of my ambitious plans.
And the people that I've loved the most have turned their backs and ran.
[CHORUS:]
This is the good life, I've lost everything I could ever want and ever dream of.
This is the good life, I found everything I could ever need here in Your arms
Loneliness has left me searching for someone to love.
Poverty has changed my view of what true riches are.
Sorrow's opened up my eyes to see what real joy is.
Pain has been the catalyst to my heart's happiness.
[CHORUS]
What good would it be if you had everything but you wouldn't have the only
thing you need.

Notice to our readers
I have discovered that some of the practices I have employed while editing “Life Together” have not taken into account
copyright laws and privacy issues as they should have. These practices include, but are probably not limited to:
1, Use of pictures and clip art without noting the source or getting permission from the photographer or artist.
2, Using lyrics of songs without consent of the writer or noting the source of these lyrics.
3, Quoting from The Bible without noting what version is being referenced or providing copyright information.
4, Using pictures of people without getting permission from everyone in the pictures.
I am working on adhering to the letter of the law (as closely as possible) and in the future will do all I can to keep the
church from being liable for any of my oversights and/or transgressions. To begin to rectify the mistakes made in the past, the
following documentation will appear in each issue of our newsletter.
All scripture references, unless otherwise noted, come from the Zondervan NIV Study

To help with the issue of privacy, if you submit any photographs to be included in “Life Together”, please make sure
every person in each picture has signed a release allowing his or her image to be published. Release forms can be obtained in
the church office.
I regret this inconvenience, but these steps are necessary to avoid leaving JUMC open to legal action.
