Quilters by the Sea RI
Volume 12, Number 10
QBS Mission Statement
To instruct, encourage, and develop the art of quilting;
to share techniques, ideas, and experiences;
and to extend friendship.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello everyone and welcome new members,
Congratulations to the entire Guild for our
lovely quilt show in May. It takes an entire
Guild to put on such a fine show. Thank you
to co-chairs Janet Roche and Kristin Meranda and to the many,
many people (members, spouses, friends, grandchildren, etc.)
who helped make the show so successful. The show is an im-
portant revenue source for the many programs, workshops and
charitable efforts the Guild undertakes each year.
As important as the show’s financial success is the sharing of our
love of quilting with our families and friends and the next gener-
ation of quilters. Most of these quilts are private works of textile
art rarely seen outside the maker’s home. This is such a rare op-
portunity for the visiting public to see them. By that measure, I
think the attendance and the look of delight when visitors en-
tered The Pennfield School said it all. It was a beautiful display,
supported by friendly Guild members willing to share their
knowledge and enthusiasm. Thank you all for making the show
a great deal of fun.
Because of our busy agenda for June, I suggest that all members
arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. to sign in because we will be
starting promptly at 7:00. There will be two tables (alphabetical
by last name) set up for check-in to speed things up.
Stop at the Membership Tables to check in, pick up your raffle
ticket for the door prize, and check your membership status.
May is the month we usually ask members to renew their mem-
berships; as we had no meeting in May, we did renewals at the
show.
We have 21 new members who joined at the Show; most of
them are planning to attend their first meeting in June. Please
make them feel welcome. New members are anxious to connect
with their new Guild. Given that we do not meet in the eve-
nings over the summer, if you are willing to exchange contact
information or a business card with a new member from your
town, please do so.

I am a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and retired primary care physician.
I am an avid reader, enjoy many kinds of music, play the accordion in the band
Tutto Bene, and love traveling with my husband and exploring new places.
Tucked into whatever spaces I can find in my very full life is my passion for
making quilts.
I create my own designs, usually based on traditional quilt patterns, but artfully arranged with an
eye toward presenting something new and interesting. Although I do make some utilitarian quilts,
for most of my work my intention is to create something beautiful with the highest quality crafts-
manship I can provide at the time. I enjoy learning new techniques and stretching myself with
challenging projects.
Designing and making quilts is undoubtedly an artistically creative endeavor for me. I love the
challenge of choosing just the right fabrics and colors for a project. I use a machine for piecing, but
do most of my applique by hand. Most of my quilts are heavily hand quilted as I love the soft-
ness and flexibility of quilts done by hand. I also find hand quilting meditative and relaxing. It
definitely helped relieve the stress I experienced as a busy physician and Medical Director of the
University of New Hampshire Health Services. In retirement, I still find it relaxing.

TREASURER’S NOTES
As I come near the end of my two-year term as Treasurer, I am busier than ever. I will report
what I have for the quilt show here. Keep in mind that most, but not all, income and expenses
have been reported to me. Included here is the quilt show data which includes Entry, Boutique,
Raffle Baskets, Book Sales, Vendors, and Ads. Raffle quilt is listed separately, and finally the
Small Quilt Auction whose net proceeds are donated to the New England Quilt Museum.
Quilt show net profit of $5,993
Raffle quilt net profit of $1,926
The Small Quilt Auction has bids totaling $1,100, which allows our guild to receive numerous
benefits from the New England Quilt Museum. If you did bid on a Small Quilt Auction item but
were not at the quilt show at the conclusion on Sunday, please contact Denise Duval to make
your payment and receive your item. Thank you all who participated in making and bidding on
these wonderful quilts.
Membership is not really part of the quilt show, but thank you for those who paid their dues at
the show, and a special thank you and welcome to our new members!
Continue to read your newsletters for updates on the quilt show data. I also will have more fi-
nancial data in the next newsletter that show how our quilt show and raffle quilt pay for our
amazing speakers. I expect that we will continue with amazing, informative, and entertaining
speakers and opportunities for great workshops and outings.
Our current balances are $18,858 in the checking account and
$5,105 in the CD.
(Continued from page 1.)
Under the calendar on page 2 is an agenda for the June 6 meeting. We have a tighter than nor-
mal program, including elections, ice cream social, our wonderful guest speaker Gladi Porsche, and
a special Show and Tell of quilt show ribbon and Viewer’s Choice winners.
We will start the meeting promptly at 7 p.m. See you all there.
Happy Sewing,
Gail

THE QBS QUILT SHOW 2019 WRAP-UP What is new since Quilt Show 2017?
The new venue, The Pennfield School. Many people commented on the natural light in the gym and that it
was large enough for 144 quilts and membership, raffle quilt, and raffle baskets to be in front of the stage.
More extensive artistic staging to deinstitutionalize the gym. Decorating the admissions table. QBS Bunting.
Renting metal racks from The Rhododendron Needlers Quilt Guild was great for set-up and take-down in-
stead of using the bulky wooden racks owned by QBS.
More extensive publicity than past shows in social media, print, The Rhode Show, QBS newsletter, QBS web-
site, and NEQM website. Targeted distribution of posters and bookmarks, as well as our traditional distribu-
tion of posters and bookmarks to other guilds.
Using the square for credit card purchases.
An organized effort to sell ads—$20 each for business card size ad with the possibility of a coupon offer on
the back to make money and encourage attendees to visit our vendors after the show.
A Sunday special at noon at the silent auction: Any quilt without a bid can be brought home NOW with a
five dollar added donation to the starting bid amount.
Saving money with a smaller two-page program instead of a booklet-size program.
Selling advance tickets to guild members.
Having a quilted sweatshirt as the challenge quilt.
Having volunteers wear aprons so attendees would know who was working at the show.
Making awards more meaningful by limiting the number of awards. The goal was to have 15% to 25% of
the quilts receive an award.
Hourly PA announcements publicizing demonstrations and winners of the raffle baskets, the raffle quilt, and
the membership raffle.
Giving volunteers a volunteer record sheet so they could remember where they were working at the show,
and getting volunteers from Portsmouth High School National Honor Society.
Creating an institutional memory of the tasks, timeline, and recommendations of the show committee in
notebooks written by each subcommittee chair.
The quilt show is a team effort!
Attendance: Because of extensive publicity, more people attended in 2019 than in 2017: Approximately
350 people attended on Saturday (tally sheet lost) and 214 on Sunday: 110 entered between 10 a.m.
and 12 p.m., 98 between 12 and 2 p.m., 6 between 2 and 3 p.m.
Boutique: Due to the diligence of guild members, there were more items in the boutique than in 2017 (five
totes full) and there were more quilts in the silent auction (57).
Members volunteering: 71 members from our youngest (age 9) to our oldest (age 90) worked on the show
committee, on set-up, at the show, and on take-down.
Vendors: The same number of vendors (10).
Number of quilts: Fewer quilts than in 2017: 144 quilts in 2019, 154 quilts in 2017.
Participating members: Fewer members entered quilts than in 2017: 49 in 2019, 56 in 2017.
Challenge: 13 members participated in the Sweatshirt Challenge.
Demonstrations: 9 members gave demos in 2019.
