Junior Bulldog Club

Thank you to the Junior Bulldog Club committee for inviting me to judge and for making the day so special and thank you to everyone who gave me such a fabulous entry 151 dogs totalling an entry of 163.

Since I last judged the breed, I have noticed some improvements. There seem to be fewer wry jaws but I did not see many, straight rows of lower, incisors. One mouth (3rd in puppy bitch was perfection).

The toplines in bitches are good, whereas the dogs, on the whole failed miserably, lots of them were level and look like tubes on the move ! Movement, has improved, again, more so in the girls, only saw one or two exhibits that were suspect lame but there is still a high proportion of “weird” movement.My main concerns were eyes, a lot of them very loose and others so tight the eyes could not fully open, some had ulcerations. In most cases where I saw this, the dogs were excessively wrinkled.

Quite a few exaggerated cartoon style heads with size excessive in proportion to body ! My other concern is front limbs which are very “Queen Ann”, accompanied by weak pasterns causing the feet to turn out, which hampered movement. Feet are also a problem, with too many that are, both soft and flat. There’s still quite a few exhibits that lack length in return of upper arm making them appear very stuffy sideways on. Another thing that I was quite shocked about was the brown pigmentation around the eyes, this appeared in many of the red males, please look to your brindles, whites and fawn smutts when selecting a dog for your bitch, too much red bred to red will soon be producing brown noses ! I am pleased to say, I saw no evidence of any dog having breathing problems. Some of the exhibits were carrying a little too much weight, especially some of the younger bitches. Having said that, some exhibitors, did present their dogs in excellent, hard, condition. Fat is not a substitute for muscle tone and when a judge puts their hands around the dogs coupling and it feels like a sponge, you know the dog is not exercised properly. One or two felt like they had a six-pack ! this was excellent and how they should be shown once they have passed the junior stage, just as in any other breed.

I found my BIS in Iking Huber’s Dutch and Multi Champion Jabberwocky’s Cloudless, who made the journey from Holland, bred by Mrs Schmidtmann (Germany) A beautiful white dog with a fabulous personality, I have judged him before in Holland and was delighted to have the opportunity to see how he measured up to the dogs exhibited here in the UK and he certainly did not disappoint me. My RBIS (res CC) was Sue Garside’s lovely homebred Ch Iceglint I’m Harry . BOS and CC was Ewa Larsson’s Jabberwocky’s Enjoy Me For Britisher, also bred by Mrs Schmidtmann in Germany, a lovely standard bitch, So spooky to find she was from the same kennel as my Dog CC. My reserve Bitch CC was Mr & Mrs Harding’s homebred Pringham Éclair Glace. Sired by, my RBIS, and litter sister to the Junior Dog winner. A very sassy white bitch, standard and compact, must have a promising future to come. BP was Hornby’s homebred, Anessabull Dark N Dashin, who was just as he should be at 8 months of age all the tools in his box and no distracting exaggerations. Best bitch Puppy was Kevin Davis’ Sebyan Ice is Nice Mystyle bred by Mr Kevin Banner and Best Veteran was Friddlington’s Theoben Tofee Plum at Albertswood ShCM bred by Mr J Archibald. I found the bitches were not going short on quality and was very pleased with the line up in the challenge however, the dogs are a bit weak in the middle classes but was pleased with all my winners.

Breeder Class: This class was one by the Gee family (Jamanic) who presented a selection of dogs V uniform in type which demonstrates to me that this kennel knows what they like and stick with it, all of the dogs were of a good standard, healthy, sound and showing good temperaments.
