Activity Boi Bo

Jill Eggleton is a prolifi c author and educational con-sultant who has worked in the international literacy arena for more than twenty years, and as a classroom teacher for thirty. She has been an Assistant Principal for several years in large urban schools and a teacher representative on a school board. Jill has worked as a lecturer training teachers in ‘Balanced Literacy’. She has been a keynote speaker at International Reading conferences and presented workshops at conferences in New Zealand, United States, Australia, Canada, and Papua New Guinea.

Currently, Jill provides practical in-service training in the area of ‘Balanced Literacy’ for teachers through-out New Zealand and internationally. She is a consul-tant in a large multi-cultural school, where she trains teachers. She works in the classroom assisting with the implementation of literacy programs. Jill Eggleton is an author of numerous children’s books, poetry and teacher resources in the organization and manage-ment of balanced literacy, assessment and evaluation.

Mucky-Yucky Eaters

Lesson Plan:Read helpful hints on inside back cover of Mucky-Yucky Eaters.

Character Value:Trying something new

Learning Centers:q Games – “Mucky-Yucky Shoe Scramble.” Have the children take off and

place their shoes in a pile. Then have them divide into two teams, each teamlining up on either side of the pile. Say “Go!” and the students scramble tofind and put on their shoes. The first team that has everyone back in theirown shoes wins.

q Science – investigating water (evaporation, condensation, cleaning things,changing things, how people use it, why plants and animals need it)

q Art – have children cut pictures of people out of magazines and draw muckyand yucky spots and splotches on them to make a collage.

q Listening Center – have children read the small book version of Mucky YuckyEaters and listen to the story on CD.

Learning Links:q SPLASH Journal – have children draw Uncle Munkle and the children.

Encourage them to write about their pictures.

q Oral Language – Mucky-Yucky Eaters storyboard, pages 26–27

q Math (measurement) – have the students measure ingredients for a simplerecipe. Alternatively, students could measure dry (sand) and wet (water)materials at the water table.

Literacy Focus:q Letter Play – (pages 28–29, Mucky-Yucky Eaters) recognize the letter P.

q Phonemic Awareness – rhyming. Use classroom rhyme charts to create sillypoems with the class. Students can act out or illustrate the rhymes.
