• People may complain of dry mouth and

have an abnormal low (<0.1 ml/min)

unstimulated whole saliva flow rate

• People can complain of oral dryness yet

have a normal whole saliva flow rate

• People may have an abnormal low flow

rate of whole saliva and not complain of

oral dryness

Hyposalivation versus xerostomia

• Discrepancy is present in 20-30% of the

subjects

• Hyposalivation = reduced flow

• Xerostomia = sensation of oral dryness

• Xerostomia ≠ hyposalivation
